General Hospital Favorite Kelly Monaco Reveals Six Months of Sobriety
Former General Hospital star Kelly Monaco (ex-Sam McCall) shared a major life update on Instagram on September 15: She is six months, 7 days sober from alcohol. “Now the whole 6/7 thing makes sense! #duces 🙏🏻😇❤️,” the actress wrote alongside a screenshot from the I Am Sober app that tracks her progress in abstaining from alcohol.
Kelly Monaco’s Life After General Hospital
Monaco left General Hospital, her daytime home since 2003, in 2024 amid major uproar from fans. The actress was a fan favorite and one of the show’s longest-running stars, appearing in over 2300 episodes. GH’s decision to kill off Sam drew national headlines and sparked viewer campaigns to get the show to reverse the move, but on October 30, 2024, Sam had a sudden heart attack and was pronounced dead. Fans later learned that she had been injected with a fatal dose of digitalis by villain Cyrus Renault (Jeff Kober).
She has maintained a low profile since her final episode aired, granting only one major interview (participating in an Entertainment Weekly retrospective about the first season of Dancing with the Stars, which she won) and rarely posting on social media. She has not appeared on another TV show since ending her GH run.
In March 2025, Monaco and longtime pal Shanna Moakler posted on Instagram to announce that they were launching a podcast, Bad Bunnies. But in July 2025, Moakler posted that the podcast wasn’t happening, saying only, “We are not doing it. She is dealing with some personal things.”
Monaco didn’t post again for over a year. Then, on May 23, 2026, her 50th birthday, she shared a video of herself working out with her nephew, Chris Monaco. “Today I turned 50!” she declared. “There’s no place like home… coach @__monaco getting me back in shape. 💕”
Since that message, she has posted to Instagram three more times, most recently four days ago, when on her mother Carmina’s birthday she shared a family photo and wrote, “She turns 70 today and I got to wake up next to her! How good is God. Happy Birthday mom. I love you to the moon and beyond @kellysmom1 🎊🎈🎂🙏🏻❤️.”
