General Hospital Comings & Goings: Broadway Crossover for Emma and Gio

Comments

A Broadway star is headed to Port Charles! Entertainment Weekly broke the news that Michael James Scott, who has played Genie in the Aladdin musical since 2019, will be playing himself in multiple episodes of General Hospital, in which he will appear alongside Giovanni Mazza (Gio) and Braedyn Bruner (Emma). “So excited for everyone to see this!” enthused Bruner as she shared the big news in her Instagram Stories.

A Whole New World

The crossover will kick off in the Thursday, April 23, episode of GH, when Gio treats girlfriend Emma to a trip to New York City. In the April 24 episode, Gio introduces her to his old friend, Scott, whom he met years ago while playing violin on Broadway. Then, on Monday, May 4, Scott returns the favor by taking a trip to Port Charles and performing his big number from Aladdin, “Friend Like Me,” at The Savoy.

Aladdin opened at the New Amsterdam Theatre back on March 20, 2014, and is based on the 1992 Disney animated film of the same name, which starred the late Robin Williams as Genie. The Broadway adaptation received five Tony Award nominations, including Best Musical, and James Monroe Iglehart took home the trophy that year for Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical for his turn as the original Genie.

Before joining the cast of Aladdin as a standby for the role of Genie, Scott appeared in multiple Broadway productions, including Tarzan, Mamma Mia!, Hair, Elf, and The Book of Mormon. He also played Genie in the Australian Tour, the North American Tour and in the West End production of Aladdin. On television, Scott has voiced characters on animated series like South Park and Central Park, and can currently be seen as Nurse Dubois in the revival of the ABC sitcom Scrubs. The actor is slated to wrap his run as Aladdin’s Genie with the Sunday, May 3, performance.

GH, which celebrated its 63rd anniversary on April 1, has featured numerous references to Disney properties in the past. The soap airs on ABC, which Disney acquired back in 1995, and the 1992 Aladdin animated film was a huge hit for Disney, becoming the highest-grossing film of the year.
