Days of Our Lives Recasting Javi As Al Calderon Takes On New Prime-Time Role

Comments

Al Calderon, who has played Javi Hernandez on Days of Our Lives since October 2024, has been cast as a regular in season 2 of NBC’s Brilliant Minds. The series is based on the life and work of author and physician Oliver Sacks and stars Star Trek alum Zachary Quinto. In the series, he will be playing Nurse Scotty Silva, who is widely regarded as the mayor of Bronx General, the hospital within the show.

When Soap Opera Digest reached out for comment, the soap’s spokesperson said, “We do not comment on the contract status of our actors, but fans should not worry, ‘Javi’ is alive and well in Salem.” So, while the show is not expressly commenting on Calderon’s status with the show, Digest is hearing from setside sources that the demanding shooting schedule will force Peacock to recast the role of Javi, and Deadline is reporting that they’re hearing the same.

You Gotta Have Friends

Calderon shared his big career news on Instagram and wrote, “Hold up, lemme get my scrubs on right quick. Big thanks to my crew, my village, my gang literally couldn’t do this without my right hand @mattgogal @culturedartists. My sweet sweet agent @juliemfulop @akatalent. Extra extra special thanks to @davidrapaport and @nbc for rocking with the kid 🥹,” he wrote before he added, “One more shout to @stella_selftape for quite literally being the best self tape studio in Los Angeles!”

His DAYS co-stars were quick to jump into the replies to voice their support. The actress who plays his on-screen cousin, Gabi, Cherie Jimenez, enthused, “My love ♥️ My soulmate ✨ I am so incredibly proud of you & so excited for you to experience all the magic & abundance this universe has in store for you 🥹 Mí Estrella 💫 I love you forever.”

Rachel Boyd, whose character Sophia is the mother of the baby Javi has grown so attached to, wrote, “our first responder KING 🔥🔥🔥 he stays the people’s hero.” Alice Halsey (Rachel), who is also headed to prime-time with her role as Laura Ingalls on the Little House on the Prairie reboot wrote, “Woohoooo!!!! Congratulations!!!!! 🔥🎉👏” Robert Scott Wilson (Alex) commented, “Atta boy! Congrats brotha! 🥃” and Dan Feuerriegel (EJ) added, “Yay, well done buddy.”

Another of the Hernandez family chimed in. Galen Gering (Rafe) wrote, “Yes yes yes!!!” Linsey Godfrey (Sarah) shared her thoughts, writing, “YES!!!!!!! 🔥♥️✨ love you!”

Calderon formed close bonds with his co-stars from the beginning. He told Digest in October 2024, shortly after his debut, that he gotten particularly tight with the actors who make up his character’s family, on-screen cousins Gering and Jimenez. “Cherie has become like a big sister to me,” he gushed. As for notorious jokester Gering, Calderon remarked, “If Galen and I were the same age in school, I feel like I’d get in trouble with him.”

The actor noted that it meant a great deal to him to have landed on DAYS, particularly playing a gay character. “It’s a big responsibility but I feel honored to be able to be a part of something that might change someone’s perspective,” the actor noted.
