Christopher Faces the Future
Soap Opera Weekly: You have a movie called Face the Music coming out on DVD on June 13. Can you tell us a little bit about it?
Tyler Christopher: It’s about a rock star wannabe who schemes up this idea to fake his death, come back as a woman and try to make it in the business as a woman. Lo and behold, it works! The problem is, he’s in love and he’s forced to choose between love and career.
Weekly: It’s been a while since you shot it, right?
Christopher: Five years ago. It’s been so long I feel like I was a teenager when I did it. Better late than never. The fact that it’s coming out now is just as exciting as it would’ve been five years ago.
Weekly: Do you have fond memories of dressing up as a woman?
Christopher: It gave me a newfound appreciation for the differences between man and woman. (laughs) I wouldn’t trade being a man for the world.
Weekly: So you don’t think you have a career in drag?
Christopher: No, I’m not banking on that one.
Weekly: But you did get to whip out the eyeliner again a few years ago when Nikolas did the pirate storyline with Emily.
Christopher: I’m starting to see a pattern that I’m not sure I quite like! It comes in threes, you know.
Weekly: Did you do your own singing in the movie?
Christopher: No, I didn’t. Part of the idea was to promote new artists, so we used only unsigned bands for the soundtrack. They ran a contest for new bands to get their music into the film. I actually learned how to play the title song on the guitar so [viewers] could at least see my hands moving. I’m not a terrible singer, but Tyler Christopher won’t be cutting any No. 1 singles any time soon.
Weekly: You have another project coming down the pike now, called SECRETS IN A SMALL TOWN. Any update on that?
Christopher: We wrapped on the pilot for ABC. The buzz is good. I haven’t seen one frame, but I know the shoot went well, the script was good, the actors were great, and we’re just playing the waiting game like everybody else.
Weekly: What did you think of all the tabloid hoopla about you and your co-star, Denise Richards (ex-Brandi, MELROSE PLACE), dating?
Christopher: She has the unfortunate burden of photographers waiting outside her home and following her to the set. On the first day of shooting, we had a kissing scene, and there were paparazzi outside the set — you can’t tell them to leave — and they took a picture and put it in the tabloids and spun it any way that they saw fit. If we’re dating, does it mean we actually have to go out on a date, or have things changed these days?
Weekly: And shouldn’t the paparazzi pay for the date since it was their idea?
Christopher: They kind of should! You can’t believe everything you read.
Weekly: Speaking of believing what we’re reading, what’s your status with GH?
Christopher: I’m happy there until somebody tells me that it’s not my home anymore.
Weekly: Well, it’s definitely homey with both of your cousins, Derk and Drew Cheetwood (Max and Milo) working there.
Christopher: We’re trying to get Derk’s mother on the show now. Bring the whole family on. And now Derk’s got story! It’s getting pretty crazy. Max has a thing for Carly, and I promise you’ll laugh a lot.
Weekly: You’re all from Ohio. Is this some kind of Buckeye invasion of Port Charles?
Christopher: Oh, yeah, Ohio, baby! Steve (Burton, Jason) is from Ohio; Matt (Marraccini), who played Jesse, he was from Ohio; Stephen Nichols (ex-Stefan, Patch; DAYS OF OUR LIVES) is from Ohio. Is it really that bad [in Ohio]?
Face the Music will be available on DVD from New Line Home Entertainment on June 13.
