After a long hiatus from daytime — she exited the role of All My Children’s Babe Carey back in 2007 — Alexa Havins is back on the soap scene, making her General Hospital debut this coming Tuesday, November 19. On that day, the character — who was rendered comatose after a bomb leveled The Floating Rib back in 2020 — will emerge from her long medical slumber.

A Big Comeback

In a new interview with TV Insider, the actress teased that the show’s writers “have written some really fun things. We know she’s waking up from a four-year coma, so we’ve got a lot of twists and turns and we hit the ground running.”

Havins joined the GH ranks with an awareness of Lulu’s important place in the show’s history, as the daughter of Luke and Laura. “Just being a part of that next Spencer family adventure feels very rewarding,” she told the site. “To be able to be a piece of such a massively important family on the daytime canvas feels like an honor. I want to honor what Genie [Francis, Laura] and Anthony [Geary, ex-Luke] built.”

Havins will be the third actress to play a grown-up version of Lulu, following Daytime Emmy-winner Julie Marie Berman (2005-13) and Emme Rylan (2013-2020), and she stressed that she didn’t intend to emulate how her predecessors interpreted the character. “Julie’s Julie and Emme’s Emme,” she noted. “Obviously, it’s going to be a more mature version of her and I’m me and I can’t be them.”

Her take on the character, she shared, is that “Lulu is a spitfire. She loves her mother, but she’s her father’s daughter. She takes huge chances.”

Havins also told the outlet that she has yet to cross paths with Michael E. Knight (Martin), her former AMC co-worker, at GH, but that her real-life husband, Justin Bruening, who played the on-screen son of Knight on AMC, is “highly jealous” that Knight will now be playing her on-screen family member (Martin is Laura’s half brother and Lulu’s uncle).

It’s safe to say that Knight is looking forward to their reunion, as well. When Soap Opera Digest broke the news of Havins’s casting to him, he had a big reaction. “Oh, my God. Alexa?! Stop, you’re lying! Oh, that’s amazing. That’s fantastic. That’s really, really good news. She is a wonderful actress and I just love both of them [Havins and Bruening].”
