Who Was Alan on Young and Restless?

Alan Laurent on Young and Restless was a new character, but the actor might have been familiar to soap fans. Christopher Cousins debuted as the new character in the April 30, 2024, episode, but he previously appeared on Another World and As The World Turns in the ‘80s and One Life to Live in the ‘90s. More recently, he played a WSB doctor on General Hospital in 2020. But who was Alan? Here’s everything you need to know — and it’s not much, as his life came to an abrupt end… not that anyone on Y&R knew until later!

Dr. Alan Laurent was a friend of Ashley Abbott’s from her time in Paris. Since he’s a psychiatrist, Traci Abbott reached out to Alan because she was desperately worried about her sister’s mental state. He flew to Genoa City to speak with Traci in person and recalled how upset Ashley got when she returned to the cafe in Paris and realized that her memories didn’t match what really happened with Tucker McCall that fateful day. Traci explained about Ashley’s personality changes and blackouts, and how she has resisted any attempts to get professional help. The shrink explained that as a friend, he couldn’t treat Ashley himself, but he would do what he could to help.

When Ashley returned home, she was excited to see Alan again and decided to take him out to lunch. Given that Ashley was currently in her Belle personality, she was overly perky and cheerful. So when Alan tried to ask how she was feeling, he couldn’t get an honest answer out of her. Ashley insisted there was nothing wrong with her mentally and decided that she would use the guy to have some fun. Ashley’s “Mrs. Abbott” alter tried to get Alan to return to Europe but “Belle” later persuaded him to stick around. Diagnosing Ashley with DID, Alan theorized that something very traumatic had happened to her in Paris to cause her personality to splinter for protection. Traci accompanied Alan and Ashley to Paris to try to get to the bottom of things. Also in Paris, Tucker ran into Alan on the street and was confused when the guy didn’t seem to recognize him.

Alan pressed Ashley to recall what had happened after the fight with Tucker, and she said she called Alan to meet with him. But Alan said he never got that call and wasn’t in Paris at the time. The shrink then began to suspect that Ashley had spent the evening with his psychotic twin brother, Martin. As Ashley remembered more and more of that evening, it became clear that Martin had manipulated her and kissed her, causing her break. But it was Martin who had helped her make the breakthrough, and when Alan escaped the closet where he’d been trapped, the twins fought and fell over the balcony railing! In the aftermath, Alan survived while Martin died.

Alan continued growing closer to Traci as he shared information on Ashley’s progress at the clinic where she was receiving treatment. When Danny and Christine visited them in Paris, they happily approved of the budding relationship between Traci and Alan. When Traci had to fly to Los Angeles for a meeting, she invited Alan to come with her and he happily accepted. Back in Genoa City, Alan accepted Traci’s invitation to move into the Abbott mansion. 

In December 2024, Alan agreed to hypnotize Sharon Newman to help her remember what had happened during her blackouts in the hopes of clearing her of murder and attempted murder charges. And as 2025 began, Alan confessed to Traci that he didn’t like how their jobs kept them apart so often and awkwardly popped the question. Traci excitedly accepted, and he rushed off to get her a ring… but also checked his phone to monitor Sharon and Phyllis Summers, who he had been holding captive!

Alan continued trying to woo Traci while his phone continued blowing up with alerts about his prisoners trying to escape the clinic. When he caught Traci with his phone, he lied that his phone had been hacked and steered the conversation towards the wedding. But the seed of doubt had been planted, and when Alan returned from his trip, he could tell something had changed. Although he continued to insist to Traci, Ashley, and Jack that he was Alan, they didn’t believe him, and Chance put him under arrest. At the station, Sharon and Phyllis confronted him, and while he held up the facade for a while, he eventually cracked and revealed he was Martin and had been since that fatal fall that killed his brother, Alan!
