General Hospital Spoilers: ‘It’s Drew Against The World’ After Will Exclusion, Cameron Mathison Teases (EXCL)
Drew Cain being on the warpath is nothing new — the cocky General Hospital congressman has racked up so many enemies, the PCPD is currently trying to untangle quite the web of potential suspects in his high-profile shooting. But according to his portrayer, Cameron Mathison, his thirst for revenge kicks up to a whole new level after the death of his mother, Monica, and especially after finding out that he’s been left out of her will.
Man Overboard
In Mathison’s view, he tells Soap Opera Digest, Drew’s twisted psyche can be traced back to a feeling of rejection by his family of birth. And it’s true that the guy did have an unstable upbringing. After his late biological mother, Susan Moore, gave birth to him — and his twin brother, Jason — in New York City, Susan’s cousin, Heather Webber, kept his very existence a secret and sent him off to live with Betsy Frank. Meanwhile, Susan returned to Port Charles with baby Jason, who was doted on by his father, Alan Quartermaine, and eventually adopted by Alan’s wife, Monica. While he was raised in the lap of luxury at the Quartermaine mansion and received the finest education money could buy, Betsy did her best to provide a loving (if far more modest) home for little Andrew. But her slimy boyfriend, Jim Harvey, began molesting Heather’s young son, Robert Frank (then called Bobby, who later became the reformed serial killer artist known as Franco), and Betsy ultimately gave Drew up. He spent most of his childhood in an orphanage before joining the Navy. As an adult, his true biological roots were exposed, and even though both Susan and Alan were long dead by that point, Monica warmly welcomed him into the Quartermaine fold.
“Part of the reason that Drew is as lost as he is and is doing a lot of things that he’s doing is because of that lack of sense of family,” says Mathison. “And the fact is that Monica was basically the only Quartermaine that really took him in. He just feels like the Quartermaines never really accepted him, other than her.” So, losing her — especially when they were not on good terms — hits Drew hard.

Declares the actor, “It’s a real, true, gut-wrenching, heartbreaking, painful thing that they ended on such a bad note — Monica basically cutting him out, not letting him on the grounds, and then she passes away without him reconciling with her, or at least being able to say good-bye or anything … She’s an incredibly important figure in his life, I would say the most important figure in his life, because she basically adopted him. She called him son, and he called her his mother. So, it’s deeply, deeply painful when he finds out that she’s gone and that he didn’t get a chance to make things right with her.”
But it doesn’t take long for that pain to turn into hostility, especially after Tracy kicked him out of Monica’s memorial service. “It was ballsy of him,” chuckles Mathison of Drew’s decision to crash the private service without an invitation by the rest of his estranged kin. “And obviously, it didn’t go so great! But it was fueled by pain and anger and a broken heart.”
The final straw, for Drew, is learning that Monica cut him out of her will. “He really, definitely feels that after not being invited to the memorial, and then being cut out of the will, that the Quartermaines never considered him part of the family,” Mathison explains. “And there’s a lot of pain and there’s a lot of anger around that — and he’s definitely going to let them know it!”
So much for the loss making Drew take stock of his life and perhaps seek to redeem himself! “On Instagram, I get a lot of responses saying, ‘Oh, this is Drew’s chance to come around and finally see the error of his wrong ways!’ But he definitely doesn’t go that way, ladies and gentlemen! That’s not happening — not as far as I can see, or anytime soon. It’s Drew against the world — and Drew against the Quartermaines, specifically.”
The old adage that “hurt people hurt people” applies to Drew, in Mathison’s estimation. “I feel like that’s the case with Drew,” he nods. “He is definitely hurt from this experience — and he’s gonna go out and hurt some people! Or at least manipulate them and retaliate against them.”
