On May 15, Doug Davidson notches 40 years of playing Y&R’s slacker-turned-private-investigator-turned-police-chief Paul Williams. Here we look back at some of character’s memorable moments from the last four decades.

1981: Paul met aspiring rocker Danny Romalotti (Michael Damian) while both were working as waiters at Jonas’s restaurant. Paul agreed to manage Danny’s career but after it skyrocketed, Paul opened a detective agency instead.

1986: The breaking point for Paul and Lauren’s (Tracey E. Bregman) rocky marriage was when she submitted his naked snapshot to a contest and it became a centerfold for a national magazine. Despite their divorce, the exes are still the best of friends.

1988: Paul fell in love with the already-married Cassandra (Nina Arvensen), whose dying husband, George, framed the young man for murder. Luckily, Paul was exonerated but Cassandra died when she was struck by a truck.

1998: Paul was shocked to learn that his presumed-dead father, Carl (Brett Hadley) was living with amnesia and another woman, Ruth (Leslie Beavis). Since his memory couldn’t be recovered, Paul’s mother, Mary, permitted her husband to stay with Ruth.

2002: Paul married the scheming Isabella (Eva Longoria) after she gave birth to their son, Ricky. After trying to kill Christine, Isabella was locked up in a sanitarium, where she still resides.

2012: A deceptively happy family portrait with Paul’s children Ricky (Peter Porte) and Heather (Jennifer Landon). Ricky turned out to be a killer, who died after his father was forced to shoot him, and Heather left Genoa City to be with Daniel.
