In 1989, Nico Kelly (Maurice Benard) and Cecily Davidson (Rosa Nevin) wed on All My Children. It was not a marriage based on love — Cecily needed to get hitched in order to access her trust fund, so she told Nico she would give him half of her fortune if he tied the knot with her, and he agreed to do so. Of course, the pair ended up falling genuinely in love.

In 1998, Jasper "Jax" Jacks (Ingo Rademacher) and Brenda Barrett (Vanessa Marcil) got engaged on the beach in Malibu on General Hospital. In accepting her proposal, Jax told Brenda, "I've loved you since the first time we came to Malibu, and there is no way I can walk away from that. I'll marry you, Brenda. And I'll promise you — this time, no matter what happens, nobody leaves." "Nobody leaves," she beamed back.

In 2009, Lily Winters (Christel Khalil) and Cane Ashby (Daniel Goddard) wed for the first time on Young and Restless. In 2015, General Hospital broadcast the first of two live episodes, during which Anna Devane (Finola Hughes) shot Carlos Rivera (Jeffrey Vincent Parise) to avenge Duke Lavery’s death. In an essay addressing his exit from the show that he wrote for Soap Opera Digest, Parise mused, "Carlos had to die, and I couldn’t think of a better way to go out than on live television. Although I pondered many moments whether or not Anna’s bullets would 'miss me' during the live show, the amount of gratitude and respect I have for the show and everyone involved made the choice an easy one." Ultimately, Carlos's death was reversed, and Parise returned to the show — though Carlos eventually did die (albeit at Julian Jerome's hands).
