In 1978, the 5th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards were held at the New York Hilton in Manhattan. Hosted by Family Feud star Richard Dawson, the ceremony was broadcast on ABC. The big winners were Days of Our Lives, which was named Outstanding Drama Series, Outstanding Lead Actor James Pritchett (Matt, The Doctors), Outstanding Lead Actress Laurie Heineman (Sharlene, Another World), and Ryan's Hope, which took home the prize for Outstanding Writing.
