In 1963, General Hospital debuted on ABC. Co-created by Frank and Doris Hursley, a husband-and-wife team, its original cast included John Beradino as Steve Hardy and Emily McLaughlin as Nurse Jessie Brewer. The first lines of dialogue on the show were spoken by McLaughlin ("Seventh floor, nurses' station"). In its first year on the air, it had two different executive producers, Selig J. Seligman and James Young. GH is the longest-running soap still in production, was the first to reach the milestone of 60 years on television and has won the most Daytime Emmys for Outstanding Drama Series.

In 1988, Santa Barbara's signature supercouple, Cruz Castillo (A Martinez) and Eden Capwell (Marcy Walker), wed. The wedding was shot on location at the Stonepipe Estate in Carmel Valley, CA, where the lovebirds swapped vows with the Pacific Ocean as the backdrop. The duo wore outfits originally belonging to Captain and Amelia Anderson, which they had unearthed in a trunk from the turn of the century, and it fell to Costume Designer Richard Bloore to come up with Eden’s vintage-inspired gown. His creation was a 40-pound confection crafted from 35 yards of silk peau de soie, supported by steel hoops and muslin under a silk organza underskirt covered with 10 yards of lace and eight yards of satin decorated with rhinestones. Eden's 32-inch veil was made from layers of illusion trimmed with lace and fell from satin flowers. “I will never take this marriage lightly," vowed Eden. “I will respect you until the end of time.”

In 1997, Michael Park made his As The World Turns debut as Jack Snyder. The actor remained with the show through to its cancellation in 2010 and won two Daytime Emmy statuettes as Lead Actor for his work as Jack. Jack (a cousin in the established Snyder clan) was introduced to the show to pursue an investigation into notorious baddie James Stenbeck, and decided to put down roots in Oakdale and join its police force. Jack's pairing with Maura West's Carly Tenney was one of the show's most popular romances.

In 2003, future Daytime Emmy-winner Natalia Livingston made her General Hospital debut as Emily Bowen-Quartermaine. The role had previously been played from 1995-2001 by Amber Tamblyn. In 2023, Livingston recalled to Soap Opera Digest of her early days on the show, "Of course, I was a little nervous coming in, especially as a recast, because I knew how loved Amber was. But everybody welcomed me right away. I felt lucky to be joining the show as part of a family. Those Quartermaine scenes were crazy and chaotic, in a fun way."

In 2016, Bold and Beautiful’s Steffy Forrester (Jacqueline MacInnes Wood) and Wyatt Fuller (Darin Brooks) said, “I do" in a ceremony performed by a minister that was played by Chaz Bono. Steffy married Wyatt while she was under the impression that she had been jilted by her MIA lover. In point of fact, Liam was suffering from amnesia and was essentially being held hostage by Wyatt's mother, Quinn, who had hoped to pave the way for Wyatt to have the happily-ever-after he desired with Steffy.
