Y&R Exclusive: Courtney Hope On Whether There’s Hope For An Adam/Sally Reunion
Adam (Mark Grossman) and Sally’s Young and Restless love story came to a sudden end in 2024 after he cheated on her with Chelsea. Now, Adam is back together with Chelsea, while Sally is getting serious with Billy, Adam’s longtime rival. But even as they go their separate romantic ways, many viewers still think that Adam and Sally are the endgame duo. Soap Opera Digest asked Courtney Hope, Sally’s portrayer, for her perspective on whether an Adam/Sally reunion might be in the cards.
Ex Marks The Spot
“I think it comes down to trust,” Hope asserts. “Sally really had her trust shattered with him, especially when he was blatantly lying to her face,” telling her that nothing sexual had transpired between him and Chelsea. “I think she wanted so badly to believe that he was different than everybody else said that he was. She saw the cracks in the pavement of what everybody else was pointing out, but she was like, ‘Oh, the whole sidewalk’s not gonna crumble. That’s not who he is!’ And I think when that rug was pulled out from under her, it really shifted [her perspective on Adam].”
Which is not to say that Sally has fully hardened her heart toward her ex. “I think that she still cares about Adam,” Hope says. “I think there will be love there, but I think that more than anything, it’s a boundary and a will that she has to have for herself [not to fall for him again] because she was disrespected. That’s one of the biggest things I’ve really held on to with [playing the relationship] — you can care about someone and love someone, but when they take advantage of you and disrespect you in that way, have to turn the page.”
Adam and Sally did burn brightly before they flamed out. “I think there was something initial with Adam that was like lightning in a bottle,” the actress observes. “And sometimes, as you get older, you’re like, ‘Well, maybe that lightning in a bottle isn’t what’s healthy.” The prospect of something more stable, she says, “is, I think, what contributed to her pursuit of Billy, or at least her not pulling away from Billy.”
On soaps, of course, anything can happen — even the angriest and most embittered of exes can and have reconciled. “Obviously, we never know where a storyline is going to go,” Hope concedes. “But as of right now, she’s [focused on] bolstering herself again. I think she really lost her confidence and I think Billy is helping her slowly but surely get that back.”
But Sally is also evolving outside of her relationship with Billy, according to Hope. “Sally has given up so much of her life over the last several years to other people,” the actress points out. “And she’s taking that back up now and standing up for herself.”
