What Liam’s Health Crisis Could Mean For Bold and Beautiful
Ex Marks The Spot: Steffy (Jacqueline MacInnes Wood) begs Liam (Scott Clifton) to live.
Liam Spencer, a once pivotal character on the Bold and Beautiful canvas who had been relegated to back-burner status over the past few months, is now in the throes of a health crisis that could finally restore him to a position of prominence on the show.
Life or Death Crisis
From the moment a frantic Steffy found her ex-husband collapsed and unconscious outside his father Bill’s home, her focus has been entirely on Liam. Teary and distraught, she called 911 and summoned medical help for Liam. At the hospital, she hovered as paramedics, then Dr. Grace Buckingham, tended to him, and sobbed when he flatlined. He was rushed into surgery for a brain bleed, after which Steffy sat by her ex’s bedside, willing him to live, awash in memories of their long and storied past. Her husband, Finn, meanwhile, was home with Kelly, Liam and Steffy’s daughter, and left to wonder why his wife and her former spouse hadn’t shown up for their planned activity with Kelly.
If the threat of losing Liam does indeed bring Steffy’s once-fiery passion for Liam bubbling back to the surface, the timing is perfect from a dramatic standpoint. After all, while she’s happily married to Finn, the foundation of their domestic bliss has been shaken by Steffy’s efforts to come to terms with the fact that the psychotic Luna is Finn’s daughter. Watching Liam nearly die could not only make Steffy reevaluate just how over Liam she truly is, but it could make her rethink whether she wants to spend the rest of her life — and perhaps more to the point, if she wants her children to spend the rest of their lives — in a seemingly unavoidable proximity not only to Luna (who tried to kill Steffy) but to Sheila (who also tried to kill Steffy). Cracks in the Finn/Steffy union could also spark story for Sheila, who perhaps could capitalize on even the hint of something going on between Steffy and Liam to manipulate Finn away from his wife.
Steffy isn’t the only former love from Liam’s past who could get pulled in to the story of his near-death experience. His other ex-wife, Hope, is at a major crossroads in her own life. She’s lost her job at Forrester Creations, her professional reputation is in tatters, she’s estranged from even her fiercest defender (mom Brooke) and her latest romance, with Carter, has tanked. While Liam was fighting for his life in the hospital, Hope was practically gushing to her dad, Deacon, about what a great father and good man Liam is. And while Hope and Liam’s most recent marriage hit the skids in a major way just a few years back, they were once a picture-perfect couple who were blissfully raising Beth (and Douglas)…. that is, until his unresolved feelings for Steffy and her lust for Thomas got in the way.
Is there a better time for Liam to re-enter the equation? It’s easy to see how learning that Liam nearly died might awaken Hope’s lingering love for him and make her reflect on the life they once shared together. Their love story unfolded over many years and then — poof! — it was over. Could B&B mount a present-day version of “Lope” that would win over their detractors? And a Liam/Hope reunion storyline could only be made juicier if Thomas was to return home from Paris (the city), particularly if he was single again following some romantic debacle with Paris (the character).
Liam’s life-or-death crisis could also have huge implications for Bill. Liam’s father is bound to feel incredible guilt over what happened to his firstborn son. The pair had a horrible blowout fight moments before Liam collapsed. Bill rebuffed and belittled his son, then stormed out of his house, ordering Liam to be gone by the time he returned home. Once Bill learns what happened in the wake of their argument, and that he almost lost Liam for good, he’ll have to come to terms with the harsh way he treated him. It could be a day of reckoning for Bill and might finally send him on a path of reevaluating his most intimate familial relationships and his role in their constant strain. Having the pair reunite and rebuild a strong relationship would be wonderful to watch. Of course, Liam would have to be open to the reconciliation. If he’s not, Bill will have to pull out all the stops to regain the love and respect of the son he lost, which might be even more interesting.
Liam’s medical crisis has the potential to dramatically shift the dynamics of several relationships on the soap, reigniting old passions and deepening existing tensions. Unresolved feelings and overwhelming guilt set the stage for compelling drama as Liam fights for his life and his loved ones learn about his condition. It could cause characters to reevaluate their lives, shifting relationships across the board and shaking things up in a way that hasn’t happened in a long time.
