If you could pick the brain of any historical figure, who would it be?

“Depends on the mood I’m in. If I’m in a very philosophical mood, it might be Plato. More recently, maybe [Thomas] Jefferson?”

What is your cocktail of choice?

“Vodka on the rocks with olives. The olives are most important. I think I drink them for the olives.”

What is your favorite book from when you were younger?

“I didn’t really start reading until junior high school. I read a Gore Vidal book called The City and the Pillar. I led a very sheltered life as far as a lot of things mentioned in it. He deals with homosexuality, and it was sort of startling for a young man who’d never  heard of it before. It was a good book.”

What would you love to have a never-ending supply of?

“Chocolate-covered macadamia nuts.”

Where is the strangest place you’ve met a fan?

“One of those little fortress towns in Tuscany, sitting in a sidewalk café. This fan from Ohio came up to me.”
