PASSIONS’s Charles Divins Woos AMERICAN IDOL’s Kimberley Locke

Comments

Kimberley Locke: [The video is for] my first single, called “8th World Wonder,” from the album One Love. Today, we found out we were [Billboard‘s] No. 1 single sales for the week. Then, I get to work with Charles. Not a bad day. They didn’t have to push me to work today [laughs].Digest: Did you have a say in who played your man in the video?
Locke: My manager and I were talking about different people, and he was like, “Oh, my God, the guy from PASSIONS.” So, I TiVo-ed PASSIONS, and I was like, “Good call!” They sent [his] pictures over, and I was like, “Real good call!”Digest: Did you know who Kimberley was when you got the part?
Charles Divins: I had to look her up. I wasn’t an AMERICAN IDOL watcher. I heard the song, and the first time you hear it, you get it. It should be a hit.Digest: Is this your first video, Charles?
Divins: It’s my first leading-man role in a music video. We ad-libbed all the scenes; it’s nice to not have to learn dialogue.Digest: What is the concept of the video?
Locke: It’s a love song, and the chorus is, “Seven days and seven nights of thunder/The water is rising/I think I fell in love with the eighth world wonder/And he’s the eighth world wonder.”
Divins: Yeah, I’m the eighth world wonder!Digest: Is this your first acting experience?
Locke: Yes. Charles helps me a lot when we’re one-on-one in scenes; he was always talking. I followed him. We fake-talked, carried on a conversation that fit the situation as if we were really in it. I learned a lot from Charles — how to get in the scene and talking yourself into the scene. That’s the most important thing ’cause there are no words here; it’s just acting.
Divins: It’s her first video, so I wanted to make her feel comfortable with me. She never met me before today.Digest: Kim, do you have the acting bug?
Locke: I do. I was talking to Charles about that. I do want to act eventually, but I think everything comes in time.Digest: What would you want to do?
Locke: Because I don’t have any experience, I want to start off small, maybe some sitcom appearances, maybe a guest appearance on a soap, then start auditioning for some more serious roles. I’d love to do a movie.Digest: Any idea what your next single will be?
Locke: We don’t know yet. There are lots of options, but we have to wait and see. The success of this one is hope for the next one.Digest: How do you feel about reality TV?
Locke: The viewing audience loves it, and people like being a part of it. If people didn’t like it, people wouldn’t be auditioning for these reality shows. But people do; people want their moment of fame.Digest: Do you keep in touch with any contestants from AMERICAN IDOL’s second season?
Locke: I keep in touch with [winner] Ruben [Studdard], Carmen [Rasmussen] and Clay [Aiken]. Clay and I are roommates.Digest: Kim, do you watch PASSIONS?
Locke: I don’t, but I will now to see what Charles is all about.Digest: Charles, how did you work on PASSIONS and do the video in the same day?
Divins: Luckily, I had a light day at the show, and they were accommodating to help us out. The video producer was nice enough to let me out for three hours in the middle of their shoot. I was a little stressed, but it worked out really well. It’s been a fun day.
