Digest: What was it like to go back and do rock ‘n’ roll after the musical theater?
Brier: Actually, you do less. You sing more from your gut. In musical theater, there are so many other things you have to worry about. The first track on the album, called “Wrecked,” was the first take we did. I stepped up to the microphone and that was it, we never did it again. It was so raw and it worked. But I’ve never done extensive work in front of a microphone like that, and as I started singing for a while, my musical theater ear came in and I had to learn to kind of shut that off and form a more emotional standpoint. Then, once we recorded it, we went into the overdub studio to fix things, and it was really hard for me at first to listen to things. I’d say to my producers, “It didn’t sound right,” but they’d say, “No, no. Listen, it’s good. Leave it alone.” With rock ‘n’ roll music, you don’t want to make it too slick, I don’t think. So that was a big lesson for me to learn.Digest: So, at what point will you shop the record to labels?
Brier: My goal is to sell enough albums so I can go to a bigger label and say, “Look, I was able to sell 10,000 copies on my own,” which is pretty good. If they then picked me up, I’d have more power in the situation. But either way it goes, it’s something I’m really proud of and something I think the fans will really like. It’s for the fans, but it’s also for me. I put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into it. If I was just making an album for the fans, I’d have probably made a very different kind of album, but instead I made an album that we’ll both like.
