It’s Only My Opinion: Unlikely Allies on General Hospital, Young and Restless and Other Soaps

Comments

Strange bedfellows are brewing. We’ll chalk that up to the old adage, “the enemy of my enemy is my friend.”

Who thought Jack Abbott would ever ask Victor Newman to team up so they could vanquish Cane on Young and Restless?

Jack: “It’s time to lay down our swords. I’m suggesting we join forces long enough to get Cane out of our lives. He could wipe out Jabot, Chancellor, and Newman Enterprises.”

Victor: “Maybe you deserve to lose Jabot. Cane is not going to use his software to come after my companies.”

Wanna bet? Jack correctly surmised Victor had tried to make a devil’s bargain with Cane and said it’s a mistake to trust him. Nikki weighed in that they should listen to Jack because the more people trying to stop Cane, the better.

Jack: “The three of us working together? Cane does not stand a chance. I believe the key to Cane’s motives is Jill. I want to turn the tables; no more playing defense. We figure out a way to sabotage Cane’s empire from the inside.”

The many layers of this unlikely union include 1) both men have been married to Nikki; 2) Victor’s granddaughter, Claire, just broke up with Jack’s son, Kyle; and 3) Jack’s brother, Billy, is out to destroy Victor. (I will throw in the fact that the heart beating in Victor’s chest came from Jack’s late niece, Colleen, thanks to a 2008 heart transplant, but Y&R does not remember that. I do.)

Add Michael to this odd couple and you’ve got some seriously strange bedfellows.

Michael (entering Victor’s office): “Dare I ask why two enemies are just hanging out together?”

Jack: “The rare occurrence of a common enemy has taken precedence.”

Michael: “Cane. The enemy of my enemy is my friend.”

Jack:Friend would be overstating the case.”

Victor blustered that he won’t allow Michael to betray him again, and he can take care of his own family, thank you. Nikki wants to unite, Lauren is against it, and Diane’s worried — which ropes three A-list wives into this mess, too. My money’s on the skirmishing six. Cane may have money, but his kids won’t talk to him, and his ex-wife, Lily, barely tolerates him. There’s strength in numbers, even if some of them hate each other.

Jack: “As stomach-turning as it will be to both of us, are we going to join forces against Cane? We can hate each other later. It would be my pleasure.”

Days of Our Lives’s Xander hated his half brother, Philip, so much that he beat him to a pulp (after learning Philip faked his inheritance of Titan). They later had to unite to keep Tony from taking over their company and making it part of DiMera Enterprises.

Xander needs Philip even more now, because Philip’s agreeing to lie about his beating helped Xander win back his wife. Sarah wants to go to couples counseling, but Xander’s afraid his lies will come out if he starts telling the truth (Duh). Besides, reasoned Xander, they had sex three times in one night during the blackout. Who needs therapy?

Sarah: “Sex has never been our problem. Being honest is a different story.”

Xander: “You were convinced I was a monster. I don’t want to say anything in therapy that would make you feel that way again.”

Sarah: “I thought you had beaten up Philip, and I was wrong about that.”

Xander: “Why do we have to rehash all that?”

Sarah: “We can’t ignore our problems.”

As much as Xander wants to…

Beyond the Gates’s Hayley can’t ignore her husband’s attraction to his ex-wife, and the more she nags, the more it increases. When Bill heard Dani got drunk-married in Vegas to Andre, he ordered a copy of her marriage certificate and combed the courts for annulment papers. His current wife was not pleased.

Hayley: “You have one last chance to explain why you give a damn about Dani’s marriage before you have two exes instead of one.”

Don’t tempt him. Bill told Dani that just the sight of her marriage paperwork was “triggering” for Hayley, and Dani mocked his child bride, saying, “Aw, poor Hayley Wayley” in a baby voice. The exes agreed they need boundaries, so Bill suggested pissing each other off by hurling insults.

Bill: “You are a walking, talking, toxic storm.”

Dani: “You are a heartless, manipulative bastard.”

Bill: “You are…[steps closer]…  incredibly beautiful.”

Smooch!

Hey, Hayley: Your enemy just became your rival (again).

It pains me to say that Luna’s vile actions on Bold and Beautiful seem to be paying off. Her summer shooting spree didn’t stop her adoptive grandma, Li, from bringing her back to life (don’t ask), and when Luna’s other grandmother, Sheila, discovered the ruse, they teamed up. The problem? Sheila tried to kill Li in 2022, and they hate each other.

Most recently, Li accused Sheila of masterminding Luna’s “get out of jail free” card, which involved drugging and raping Will Spencer to get pregnant with his baby, despite Will being in love with Electra.

Li: “Luna was so adamant about not going back to prison.”

Sheila: “Maybe she outfoxed Dollar Bill and the rest of the Spencers. That’s a pretty impressive move by our granddaughter, wouldn’t you say?”

Yes, drugging and assaulting an innocent young man after murdering/shooting/kidnapping half the town is so impressive. Is this supposed to be entertaining?

Luna (gloating): “Me, Will, and our little baby are going to be one big happy family, and there’s nothing you can do about it.”

Electra: Thwack!

Okay, that was entertaining.

Everyone in Port Charles hates General Hospital’s Drew, as evidenced by the familiar faces on Anna’s bulletin board labeled “persons of interest” after his shooting. The strangest bedfellows coming together to vanquish him were Carly and Nina. They had a good run, but the custody battle between Michael and Willow put them back at each other’s throats. Tracy also beat Drew when he tried to bulldoze the Quartermaine crypt by joining forces with the kids she constantly complains about (Emma, Gio, Trina).

Elsewhere, enemies Brook Lynn and Lulu dropped their swords after Maxie took ill to help care for her kids.

But the biggest record scratch happened when Alexis and Kristina teamed up with Ava, the woman they blame for the death of Alexis’s granddaughter. The trio was forced into it after Ava clocked Ric on the head to punish him for a blackmail scheme, resulting in Ava and Alexis losing big money to him. Ric woke up restrained in Alexis’s basement; the women promised to let him go when the bonds matured and the money was safely back in their accounts in 30 days.

That story set up the unlikely premise of Ric’s exes being each other’s alibis for the night Drew was shot. That also meant Ava regularly popped into Alexis’s house to drug Ric and keep him quiet.

Alexis: “I can safely say that coming home to you will never be anything but disconcerting.”

Ava: “Luckily for us, this will all be over soon. We just have to endure this nightmare for 10 more days, and all the money Ric stole will be right back where it belongs.”

Unless Ric is ultimately rescued from the basement — and the enemy of their enemy becomes a threat.

Hey. It’s only my opinion.
