“Joan and I had a series of meetings with the prime minister, the president and their 10 cabinet ministers, [in addition to] the OECS,” continues Williams, here with (left to right) Venezuelan ambassador Mrs. Carmen Martinez de Grijalva, Sobers Esprit, Minister of Tourism Charles Savarin and the late Prime Minister Pierre Charles. “Joan’s strength is in strategic planning of the entertainment industry. [We helped create] a five-year plan that will be effective for this island and Joan will continue to go back over the next year to create a strategy for how all this will be implemented.”
“I taught a very specific master class about working for the screen, because almost all of the actors had incredible training for stage, but no training for film or television,” reveals Williams, here with her class. “We actually had a camera person and cameras and shot scenes of Y&R. They played Nikki and Victor, Drucilla and Neil, which made them ecstatic. There are just over 70,000 people that live on Dominica and the island stops when Y&R is on!”
“My boyfriend, Giovanni Lopez, created an amazing children’s workshop for 32 kids,” raves Williams of the New Yorker pictured above with his students. “He has taught in the Bronx and is originally from Ecuador. Each person [on this trip] originated from a country that is relatively underprivileged. I needed them to have a sense of their own history, what it’s like to be in a country that’s underdeveloped in certain areas and how we can give back.”
