GH’s Andrea Floyd: A Cut Above

Comments

Nobody is quite sure what Andrea Floyd’s agenda is on GENERAL HOSPITAL, but everyone can tell she wants to look good doing it. And her portrayer, Martha Byrne, wants to look very different from her previous role, AS THE WORLD TURNS’s Lily Snyder.“I didn’t want to be similar to what I was before; I just wanted it to feel different,” Byrne explains about her idea to cut her hair short. “Whether the audience will respond, I don’t know, but it made me feel like I was doing a different role. Andrea is more like a picture for the media. She definitely has a look for politics. Any wife of a political leader [has] a certain style that they stick to, so it’s familiar to their audience. I hate to say it, but politics is a show.”
And show business tends to be all about appearances.

“I thought about [U.S. first lady Michelle Obama],” Byrne admits. “I had one line where Andrea said to Patrick, ‘I can’t believe you don’t know who I am.’ She has the attitude, ‘How can you not know me? I’m the mayor’s wife. Don’t you read the paper? What, do you live under a rock?’ So that’s her personality: ‘I’m somebody, too. I’m not just the woman behind the man.’ I like that about her.”
