GH Exclusive: Katelyn MacMullen Says Willow Is ‘In Over Her Head’

The Price Is Right? Willow’s (Katelyn MacMullen) pull to Drew (Cameron Mathison) could cost her not only her marriage, but access to her children.
Ever since Willow and Michael’s marriage hit the skids on General Hospital with the Christmas party reveal of her scandalous tryst with Drew, Willow’s fears about potentially losing custody of the two children they share have been steadily rising. Now, both Willow and Michael are both gearing up for a custody battle that could get nasty.
Fight For Your Right
According to Katelyn MacMullen, Willow’s portrayer, “I think at first, she was thinking, ‘Okay, we’ll figure this out. Michael and I have always sort of been able to compromise and work together.’ But I think when she sees how his family is reacting, it definitely makes her wary about what might happen. They are just so upset with her, and she’s seen some stuff happen in the past with other people, and she’s like, ‘I really don’t want to be on the receiving end of that.’ ”
As she processes the split, “She’s in the frame of mind of not ever having dealt with this kind of thing; she’s a little in over her head and overwhelmed,” MacMullen explains. “She’s like, ‘Whoa, whoa, whoa, I’m not ready for a lawyer. Michael and I will work this out, we’ll talk about it, we’ve always been able to figure things out and I know we can make this fair.’ But then, of course, events transpire to change that.”
Both Nina and Drew are encouraging Willow to steel herself for a potentially ugly custody battle, and are pledging to support her through it. As grateful as Willow is to have their support, the more she leans on them, the stickier the consequences will likely be if Willow ever finds out that arguably the two people she currently trusts the most are keeping a whopper of a secret from her: they were sexually involved before Drew and Willow’s playroom escapades.
MacMullen says she’s hopeful that if Willow was to find out, it wouldn’t cause an insurmountable rift between mother and daughter. “Maybe I have a bias of wanting things to work out because Willow and Nina because they’ve always been at odds and I think it would be really cool to see them somehow make their way through this,” she muses. “But I can’t imagine that finding out that information after so much stuff has gone down without Willow thinking, ‘Maybe some of this could have been avoided if you had told me.’ Not to take any responsibility away from Willow, because even if Nina had told her, Willow is still the one who set this train in motion [where Drew is concerned]. It’s just that maybe it would have stopped sooner, and maybe it wouldn’t have gotten so out of hand and certain events wouldn’t have taken place. But that’s a question she’ll never know the answer to; she’ll never know if this would have changed or that would have changed had a transparent conversation taking place and Willow wasn’t living under this set of false pretenses, in a sense. But I also understand Nina’s perspective. I emphasize with her being like, ‘Do I tell her this information that will absolutely destroy her and could destroy our relationship?’
“I really do feel for Nina in this situation,” MacMullen continues. “Nina really has had Willow’s back, so I don’t think [her secrecy] is coming from a place of, like, ‘Oh, I just want her life to spiral.’ I think it’s the opposite. She’s trying to get Willow’s life to stop spiraling, and I think maybe she just doesn’t know if this information would actually benefit Willow or not. I am interested to see how Willow responds, certainly.”
In the midst of all this, Willow’s connection to Drew continues to deepen, and when the Congressman-elect encourages her to accompany him to Washington, D.C. for his swearing in — and to bring Wiley as her plus-one — she decides to accept. But when Michael catches wind of her travel plans, he quickly realizes that he might be able to use it as leverage against her, prompting him to take drastic action.
“It’s something she isn’t expecting,” MacMullen hints of Micahel’s move. “And it really throws her.”
And that’s not the only shock she is poised to receive in the coming days….
