General Hospital Exclusive: Alexa Havins Wants Lulu To ‘Clock Everything’ About Nathan’s Impostor

Comments

The truth is out on General Hospital — to viewers, at least — that the man running around town as Nathan West is actually Cassius Faison (Ryan Paevey), Nathan’s devious secret twin. On the show, of course, most everyone is still in the dark about his true identity, including “Nathan’s” new girlfriend, Lulu Spencer. How long Cassius will continue to get away with his charade and who will ultimately expose him remains a mystery, but Alexa Havins, who plays Lulu, tells Soap Opera Digest that she would be thrilled if her character got to be the one to bust him.

The Man, The Myth

On the April 14 episode of GH, one of Lulu’s least favorite people in Port Charles, Britt (Kelly Thiebaud), warned her against continuing to date “Nathan,” and while Lulu was quick to leap to her beau’s defense, the encounter clearly left her a bit shaken. But will she take action to get to the bottom of things? Notes Havins, “Lulu knows that there is a mystery about where ‘Nathan’ was for those seven years and what happened to him. And Lulu loves a mystery.”

When it comes to her performance in the story, Havins reveals, “There’s an element that I’m weaving in where that reporter side of her — the investigative reporter side — feels like there’s something curious here, something interesting, that she can’t quite put her finger on. I think that’s something that is also making Lulu enjoy ‘Nathan’s’ company, beyond just the history they have and the connection they have.”

On the night that Lulu and “Nathan” shared their first kiss, Cassius slipped up once in front of her while the pair was stranded together during a snowstorm and playing a drinking game. Specifically, he made a comment about his father that didn’t track with what Lulu knew about Nathan’s relationship with Faison. At the time, Havins was as in the dark as Lulu about whether or not Nathan was an impostor. “I had my suspicions, but I didn’t know for sure,” she explains. “I felt like the writers were weaving an intricate web from all corners of Port Charles and that everyone was going to meet in the middle and it was going to be fabulous, but I was just along for the ride with the audience. Every day I would get a nugget, and [Cassius’s slip of the tongue] was a little nugget that I definitely jumped on. I was like, ‘Ooh, where are they going with this?!’ I mean, that definitely caught Lulu’s ear.”

Even though Cassius is duping Lulu, Havins is hopeful that Lulu will continue to pick up on clues that “Nathan” is not who he says he is. She declares, “If there’s a slip of the tongue like that, I want her to clock it. I want her to clock everything! I want her to see it coming.” In the actress’s view, latching onto the truth is in the character’s DNA. “That comes from her parents,” professes Havins of the legendary Luke (Anthony Geary) and Laura (Genie Francis). “I really like playing that Spencer side of her, and the investigative reporter side of her and that intelligence. It’s more interesting to have something between the ears [laughs]!”
