All My Children

Five Minutes With Kim Zimmer

Comments

The always-candid Kim Zimmer (Reva, GUIDING LIGHT) called Weekly on March 14, during her vacation, to dish about the Emmy nominations. The Outstanding Lead Actress nominee opened up about everything from how she heard the news of her nod to which omissions shocked her.

Soap Opera Weekly: How did you learn of your nomination?
Kim Zimmer: I’m in Los Angeles, so it was 5:30 in the morning. I heard my phone go ‘Bing,’ meaning there was a text message. I had totally forgotten this morning what was going on. It was my fan club president, Shelli Miller, texting me, “Congratulations.” It took me about three times [reading to understand]. I went, “Congratulations… What is…? Oh, my God!” And then, two seconds later, my husband called. He’s still in New York. He knew I was nominated because a friend of ours had called him to say congratulations, not knowing I wasn’t home.

Weekly: Have you talked to anyone else?
Zimmer: I got a message from [fellow Lead Actress nominee] Crystal Chappell (Olivia), so that was nice. I haven’t spoken to any of the actors. I intend to do that at some point today.

Weekly: I know you were concerned you wouldn’t be nominated because you said that you wouldn’t put your name in if you won last year, which you did.
Zimmer: I thought maybe it might backfire on me and I’m glad it didn’t. But then I thought it wouldn’t happen because I had submitted a tape I thought might have been the wrong tape because it was different; a little lower key than usual. I thought maybe it wouldn’t be enough, so I was happy people enjoyed that side of the character as well.

Weekly: What did you submit?
Zimmer: The episode where Reva finally gets a bone-marrow transplant from Jonathan, against her wishes. He shows up and Reva has flashbacks of him when he was a little boy in San Cristobel and tells him the story of the Ugly Duckling. (Executive producer) Ellen Wheeler‘s daughter is in scenes with me too. She plays another cancer victim in the room next to me. I acted with a lot of kids in that episode, so it’s not true what they say about animals and small children.

Weekly: Have you thought about what you’ll choose for your second episode?
Zimmer: My second submission is a day where I have scenes with Jordan Clarke and Robert Newman (Billy and Josh). With Robert, Reva tries to confess to Josh that she’s dying of breast cancer but decides not to because he tells her about his plans and how happy he is with the veteran’s hospital. And the scenes I have with Jordan are Billy trying to get Reva to tell the truth. It was really good stuff.

Weekly: Anything with you and Jordan is…
Zimmer: Gold. I’m so sorry he didn’t get nominated. He broke my heart every other day in that story.

Weekly: Which other omissions surprised you?
Zimmer: Marcy Rylan (Lizzie). I think she’s done incredible work this year. But I love Stephanie (Gatschet, ex-Tammy, who was nominated in the Younger Actress category) and I’m thrilled for her. That made me happy.

Weekly: Besides your own, which nominations are you excited about?
Zimmer: Jeanne Cooper (Katherine, THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS). It excites the hell out of me. And I’m thrilled that Crystal’s in our category. I’m so thrilled that she moved up to lead, because I’ve always thought of her as a lead actress. I’m excited about the category because there are several [nominees] who haven’t gotten to do ‘ladies who lunch.’ It should be a good time.
