Exclusive DAYS Preview: Johnny And Chanel ‘Put On A Show’ To Adopt Sophia’s Baby

Everyone’s A Critic: DAYS’s Johnny (Carson Boatman) pulls out all the stops to impress Sophia’s (Rachel Boyd, l.) mother, Amy (She Ni Nielson).
Johnny and Chanel’s quest to become parents by adopting Sophia and Tate’s baby hinges on the approval of one of Salem’s toughest critics: Sophia’s mother, Amy, who wants her grandchild to be raised by a good Christian couple. Eager to impress (and hopefully win over) Mrs. Choi, Mr. and Mrs. DiMeras set up a high-stakes meeting with her that streams on Monday, March 3.
Meet the Parents
“Johnny and Chanel invite Mrs. Choi over to the DiMera mansion with Sophia and Tate,” sets up Carson Boatman (Johnny). “They try to have a little get-together, like a little luncheon.”
Tops on the agenda is making sure to convey that they’ve got what it takes to be the model parents Amy is looking for. “Johnny and Chanel try and kind of fake it a little bit. They’re trying to be very [perfect],” says Carson. “Not that they’re bad people — they really are a pretty wholesome couple — but I think they feel the pressure to try and put on a show, so to speak.”
That “show” includes a few exaggerations to prove that they can rise above the DiMera name and reputation, which leads to a few comical moments. “That’s what we’re going to be watching unfold,” previews Boatman. “Chanel comes out in a little apron, and she’s going on about a Bible study that she doesn’t actually attend.”
Johnny’s unsavory father, EJ, is included in the afternoon gathering — and his presence proves not to be a help to his son and daughter-in-law’s mission. “EJ is not always the best at putting on a good first impression,” notes Boatman. “So it all just unravels.”
While the future of the adoption remains up in the air, Boatman believes Johnny is well-equipped to take on parenthood. “I think Johnny would be a good dad,” he contends. “Johnny has a good heart, and he really loves and cares about the people in his life. He always makes an effort to make everyone feel good and to help people.”
Although EJ and Sami may not have provided the perfect example of how to be good parents and raise children, Boatman points out that his character has had some other significant role models in his life that have taught him about the sanctity of love, marriage and family values. “He has his Grandma Marlena, and his Grandpa Roman,” points out Boatman. “And as far as a couples go, Marlena and John have been together for years.”
Despite how the gathering with Mrs. Choi turns out, Johnny and Chanel remain hopeful that things could eventually work out for them to adopt Tate and Sophia’s unborn child. “Tate is technically Johnny’s cousin, so they think everyone kind of likes the idea that the baby would be staying in the family,” explains Boatman. “Although my personal opinion is that that could open up a door for some struggles down the road, if Tate and Sophia were ever to decide they want their kid back. What if they get out of their high school years, become 23, more adult and more responsible, and then all of a sudden feel like they’re ready to take the baby back? That could get a little dicey.”
However, that’s a long way off. Right now, Johnny and Chanel’s top concern is somehow getting Mrs. Choi’s stamp of approval…
