DAYS Exclusive: Paulina’s Surprise Reaction to Johnny’s Fling With Joy

Mother Knows Best: Paulina (Jackée Harry, r.) wants Chanel (Raven Bowens) and Johnny (Carson Boatman) to live happily ever after.
Chanel finding out that Johnny cheated on her with Joy sent her running straight to her mother for comfort and support on Days of our Lives. Yet Paulina didn’t exactly deliver the reaction Chanel was expecting. Instead of totally coming down on her son-in-law for straying, Paulina actually defended him, quickly pointing out that Johnny only found comfort with Joy because he was under the mistaken impression that Chanel had slept with Alex.
Tough Love
Paulina’s reaction seemed on point to Jackée Harry, her portrayer. “Well, who hasn’t done it?” proposes the actress, referring to Johnny’s unfortunate misreading of the situation involving Chanel and Alex. “That’s the thing. Think about it. People jump to conclusions and immediately do dumb things. But Paulina pleads the fifth and tries to back up her daughter. ‘Do what you have to do. Do what you feel in your heart.’ But Paulina knows that Johnny can’t cheat on Chanel. Not really. There’s no way. He adores her. So it’s just a rebound response, like young people do.”
While Paulina’s been hard on Johnny in the past when he’s hurt Chanel, she’s more understanding this time around. “She wants her daughter to be happy,” explains Harry. “And this man makes her happy, and Paulina sees it. Chanel doesn’t see it. Paulina sees it, but she’s still on Chanel’s side. Yet, secretly, she wants Chanel to calm down, get to the truth and deal with it like she should.”
That said, Paulina will of course remain firmly by Chanel’s side as she tries to work through her latest marital problem. “She doesn’t want to go against Chanel. It doesn’t work out for her when she goes against her,” notes Harry. “So she just tries to listen. She’s definitely going to be in Chanel’s corner, and she does have a little distrust for Johnny. I mean, it’s her daughter. You’re always going to be on your child’s side.”
And while Paulina can’t help but sympathize with Johnny, she will attempt to keep those feelings to herself. “She can’t tell Chanel that,” insists Harry. “No way. Chanel’s her daughter in the end, the beginning, the middle… That’s who you’re going home with, family.”
