Catching Up With Mick Cain

Comments

As a recurring character, THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL’s CJ pops in and out of the Los Angeles scene, but that’s just fine with his portrayer, Mick Cain.

Soap Opera Weekly: It seems like you have fun recurring as CJ.
Mick Cain: I have a blast…. It’s nice to come back and say hi to the people you love and have worked with in the past.

Weekly: Where has CJ been?
Cain: Apparently, CJ has been opening many [coffee houses] up and down the coast. He’s an entrepreneur.

Weekly: Has there been any discussion about CJ’s future?
Cain: Not yet. They pulled CJ [back], not knowing where they want to go yet. There are lots of possibilities in the air. I’ve heard talk of a Bridget/CJ thing starting up, again. That was back with Jennifer Finnigan, who is doing fabulously well in her career now. I’m also helping introduce the new Rick.

Weekly: Rick and CJ’s storylines were tightly intertwined, right?
Cain: Sometimes they were at each other’s throats and sometimes they were best buds. It’s like that with any friend you’re close to; family is family. Plus, when you have feuding families, sisters dying because of certain members of the Forrester clan, you can take out your aggression in places. CJ’s been known to be a bit of a hothead (laughs).

Weekly: Do you enjoy playing the fashion biz storylines?
Cain: That’s what would excite me to come back [full time]. [Executive producer/head writer] Brad [Bell] and I made a decision back when I first left the show that if I wasn’t going to be utilized in a storyline he would set me free to do other things.

Weekly: So what have you been into lately?
Cain: Boot camp! I go in the Hollywood Hills and we say affirmations with our push-ups. It’s very cool. I’m also involved with the Steppenwolf Theatre Company. I trained with Steppenwolf in Chicago and got involved with them again. It’s been great, because I’ve rediscovered why I became an actor in the first place. L.A. can, at times, be a bit tough on you. You forget that you got into this because you loved it, not because there was a dollar sign attached to it. That’s where you’ve got to come from on all fronts in life. It re-centered me, which was awesome. You have to do that every once in a while, go back to basics.

Weekly: And the little guy?
Cain: Haven Jude Cain. My best friend is 3 years old and I’m not ashamed to say that. He’s the coolest guy I know, aside from myself (laughs). Before you become a dad, there are many things you freak out about, especially if you’re on the young side, like I was. The minute you hook into that spirit, it’s like a glove that slides right on and all those things you worried and stressed about disappear. It’s made me a better person. That’s awesome. It’s a 50/50 deal. He teaches me as much as I teach him. I bought him a drum set for his third birthday. I’m growing my own drummer. I don’t have to mess around with flaky L.A. musicians, I can just have my son up there. It’s all part of the plan.

Weekly: Have you kept up with the show?
Cain: As far as CJ’s world, I hear via other people and tune in every once in a while. Outside of his world, it’s a little confusing to me at times, because I’m not here every day and I have other things on my plate, like a 3-year-old. Watching daytime TV means LITTLE EINSTEINS, MICKEY MOUSE CLUBHOUSE and, of course, MR. ROGERS’ NEIGHBORHOOD. You’ve got to love Mr. Rogers. Once he steps through that door there’s a peace and a calm. It’s indescribable. We just mellow out.

Weekly: Is real-life fatherhood anything like it was on B&B?
Cain: There are a lot of similarities. When I was on the set with those two beautiful boys who played Little Eric, I was always goofing around and joking with them and keeping their energy up to keep my energy up and keep them happy. It’s the same with Haven. He loves physical humor. Anytime I trip, fall or hit my head, he finds it hilariously amusing.

Weekly: So you’re practicing your pratfalls?
Cain: Yes, and he’s a tough audience! He knows when you’re pulling it, so you’ve got to make it look real. If he thinks one looks real and it’s funny, he’ll let you slide on the next two. “Do it again, Daddy.” He’s a director!
