Bowling for Daytime 2006
Many soap fans’ dreams were pinned on the kindness of two Jonathans, one Jade, a veteran Jerry and a newbie Jerome, as Daytime Stars and Strikes rolled into Manhattan’s Port Authority on Oct. 15.
Originally part of the GUIDING LIGHT weekend in the form of the Jerry verDorn (ex-Ross; Clint, ONE LIFE TO LIVE) and Elizabeth Keifer (Blake) Fan Club’s annual Bloss Bowling event, the day brought in over 40 stars from all four East Coast shows to bowl with their fans and raise a record $11,122 for the American Cancer Society.
GL’s Yvonna Wright (Mel) was thrilled to battle on-screen foe Beth Chamberlin (Beth). “We love each other, so we have a blast,” she enthuses. “I love it — especially that it’s for cancer.”
Her co-star Stephanie Gatschet (Tammy) learned how dedicated the Jammy “family” is. “Tom [Pelphrey, Jonathan] and I were given dog tags devoted to the Jammy story, personalized with our names,” she beams. “It’s cool; I feel like I’m part of a club.” Pelphrey (who took a photo with raffle winner Lisa Silverman, of Hubert, N.C.) adds, “I had them on all day yesterday.” Of his game, he boasts, “I did pretty good, like a 108.” And he talked his usual smack to John Driscoll (Coop).
Daytime’s other troublesome Jonathan, ALL MY CHILDREN’s Jeff Branson, also passed the 100 mark: “For not bowling since I was 17, I did all right! The turnout is phenomenal.”
I WANNA BE A SOAP STAR’s latest winner, Mike Jerome (Ted, OLTL), was barraged by Llanview lovers. “My mom is recovering from breast cancer, so this really means a lot,” he notes. “All the people here…I would do this four days a week, if I could.”
“I’ve been attacked less than I thought I’d be,” chuckles Robert Newman (Josh, GL). “I’ve had a couple of weird moments where there’s a blurring of lines between Robert and Josh, and somehow it’s my fault that Reva and Josh [broke up].” But the Cash fans encouraged him and Nicole Forester (Cassie). “The majority of people have said, ‘I’ve been a fan of Josh and Reva my whole life, but I like watching you guys.'”
Forester describes the novelty money some fans gave them: “‘Chemistry you can bank on.’ Last year, I’d only started on the show two or three weeks beforehand; everything was new to me. Now, I love my show, my cast and everyone involved.”
Former Springfielder verDorn says, “It’s been a whirlwind year,” and he is thrilled to still be involved in the festivities. “With all the events in the professional world, we’re still able to keep it together.”
Elena Goode (Jade, AS THE WORLD TURNS) was grateful to bowl for charity: “It’s really great, and anything that involves bowling is great, so the combination is smart.” She adds of the fans she’s met, “It’s really funny: People are not necessarily like, ‘Oh, we love you!’ They really enjoy not liking [Jade], and it’s fun for me, because if I had the opposite effect on people, I’m not doing my job.”
Goode’s co-star, Alexandra Chando (Maddie), enjoyed the chance to hit a few pins. “I haven’t been bowling lately,” she notes. “We used to go a lot at home, because I’m from Pennsylvania; we ran out of things to do, so, ‘All right, we’ve got to go bowling.’ But I haven’t done it in the city. If bowling were golf, I would be amazing.”
