Bold and Beautiful Controversy: Hope and Carter’s Unhinged Bid for Control

Are You Thinking What I’m Thinking? Carter (Lawrence Saint-Victor) and Hope (Annika Noelle) have hatched a wild scheme to seize control of Forrester.
I can’t be the only Bold and Beautiful viewer scratching my head over Hope and Carter’s plan to take over Forrester Creations.
For months, Hope has been acting like she’s entitled to have a job at FC forever even though Hope For The Future hasn’t been performing well. She developed a crush on married Finn, and when she got tipsy at a party, she made a pass at him that ruined their friendship — and she knew her job was on the line when Steffy issued the threat that if she ever caught Hope trying something with her husband again, she would cancel her line and Hope would be fired.
Hurt People Hurt People
So what happens? Steffy walks in on her in a compromising position with Finn and does exactly what she said she’d do: fired her. (To read actress Jacqueline MacInnes Wood’s take on her character Steffy’s drama with Hope, click here.) Hope had every opportunity to explain what was really going on, but because she and Carter want to keep their new relationship a secret, she didn’t — yet is outraged that she lost her job.
The logic of Carter’s position isn’t holding up that much better in my eyes. He’s been secretly working for a long time on his dream to take Forrester Creations to the next level as a global luxury brand. He shared his vision the Forresters — and then was put out when they didn’t immediately jump on board. Carter thinks this proposal makes sense but to the Forresters, it is an unnecessary financial risk that they aren’t willing to make with the future of their company. (I repeat: their company!)
So, with Hope mad for her reason and Carter mad for his reason, the two came up with a wild and certainly illegal plot to steal the company: They want to trick Ridge and Steffy into signing papers that put control of the LLC they asked Carter to draw up (as part of his actual job duties) into his (and Hope’s) control, thereby putting them in charge of Forrester.
This isn’t working for me because I can’t root for Carter and Hope in this situation. Both characters are displaying quite the overblown sense of entitlement. It’s great to have ideas, but no boss is obligated to accept them. Just as no boss is obligated to give a losing division an indefinite time to turn around. Then there is the inherent absurdity of their solution to the situation being to… commit fraud?! They talk of loyalty, as if the Forresters are the ones being disloyal, while they discuss stealing their company from them! If they are so unhappy with how they’ve been treated and how Forrester is being run, why don’t they start a rival company, perhaps taking Zende and Katie with them? Wouldn’t their success be the best revenge?
I’m not saying that Carter and Hope don’t have a right to feel dismissed or disrespected but their way of handling it is over the top no matter how you slice it. Hope and Carter making a power grab could have been a lot more compelling had the story been executed with a better foundation, better motives — and perhaps when the duo’s romance was not about five minutes old in soap time. Their love affair is way too new for me to buy them as a power couple prepared to take down the Forresters.
