Beyond The Gates: The Best and Worst of 2025 from Dani and Bill’s Sparks to Kat and Eva’s Rivalry

Comments

Beyond the Gates made its grand entrance into the daytime lineup in February and quickly established itself as a dramatic force to be reckoned with. At the center of the action was the Dupree family, headed up by Anita (Tamara Tunie) and Vernon (Clifton Davis). Their daughters, Dani (Karla Mosley) and Nicole (Daphnee Duplaix), fielded relationship chaos aplenty, and Ted (Keith D. Robinson) and Nicole’s daughter, Cat (Colby Muhammad), was particularly hard-hit by the revelation that her dad’s affair with Leslie (Trisha Mann-Grant) had resulted in a child — her half sister, Eva (Ambyr Michelle). But that only scratches the surface of what Fairmont Crest was serving up! Keep reading for Soap Opera Digest‘s take on the highs and lows of BTG‘s freshman year.

Most Compelling Exes: Dani and Bill

One of the most soapy things a show can do is cross ex partners in dramatic fashion to demonstrate they are not over each other. BTG delivered a master class in that this year by kicking off with Dani Dupree shooting up her ex-husband Bill’s wedding to the much-younger Hayley (on a livestream!) and then running them into each other regularly. Post shooting, Bill retaliated by having Dani arrested and showing up at the police station to taunt her… Dani stalked Bill and Hayley’s honeymoon on social media and broke into their new home… Bill flirted with his ex to get the deed to their beach house… see a pattern here? It was all (vengeful) fun and games until Bill had a mini-stroke and Dani was the only person who could talk him through his fear of hospitals — because she knows him. We saw another intimate moment between the two when Bill apologized for choosing the “battle over the guilt” after they split, adding that he should have honored her in that moment instead. Hey, wait a minute… These two still care about each other! Dani later got drunk married to Andre in Vegas, humorously naming her drink “The Bill” (because it was irresistible but bad for her), which did not sound like a woman ready to move on. Ditto Bill, who admitted to Dani’s father Vernon that the years he spent with the Dupree family were the best of his life. Viewers know Hayley is trying to kill Bill, which means he’ll eventually learn he was played for a fool. Thanks to the combustible chemistry we are repeatedly treated to between Bill and Dani, 2026 looks even more explosive than that bullet hitting her bouquet.

Best Marital Implosion: Ted and Nicole At Their Anniversary Party

We all know that happy couples don’t make for good drama on soaps, and BTG blew up the ever-so-devoted Ted and Nicole Richardson in spectacular fashion at the married doctors’ anniversary party. Nicole had unwittingly hired Eva, the daughter Ted didn’t know he had from a long-ago affair with Leslie, to help organize the event — and it went the way all great soap parties do when someone is keeping a big secret. “Are you going to tell Wifey, or should I?” purred Leslie as she strolled in dressed to the nines while the guests looked on in horror. A wildly over-the-top speech followed, complete with Leslie reporting that Ted used to bring his and Nicole’s young son Martin to the diner where Leslie worked as cover for their rendezvous. Leslie added that Bill paid her to have an abortion which she clearly didn’t have: Eva was standing right there. The fallout was Soaps 101: Ted grew closer to Eva, which caused a rift with his and Nicole’s daughter Kat, and he fell into bed with the manipulative Leslie after downing a bottle of booze. Leslie ran straight to Nicole with the news, which gave Nicole the chance to tell Ted to go to hell when he begged forgiveness for the 100th time. Seeing Nicole so publicly humiliated made her an instant heroine, while Ted is still trying to claw his way back into the family. Neither one is happy, but they’re definitely poised for more action than if they’d cut the cake at that disastrous anniversary bash and lived “happily ever after.”

Best Villain: Leslie

Leslie began life on BTG by running Nicole’s assistant off the road so her daughter Eva could take her job, which was a signal to be afraid, be very afraid! She soon orchestrated the ruination of Ted and Nicole’s anniversary party by spilling that she had given birth to Ted’s illegitimate daughter Eva, which wrecked the party and the marriage. Just as the Duprees circled the wagons, Leslie discovered she was the long-lost daughter of Anita’s fellow Articulette, Barbara (who committed suicide years ago), and was therefore entitled to the fund Anita had set up for Barbara’s family. Cha-ching! The scene of Leslie dancing around the Dupree house eying all the expensive pieces she could now afford hinted at how the money would impact the balance of power at Fairmont Crest, and this baddie did not disappoint. She went to the bank to get big money bills she could throw at Ted (ostensibly to pay him back for what he had given her and Eva), bought the house across the street from the Duprees, and inserted herself into their big fundraiser, Winterfest. Along the way Leslie also slept with a drunk Ted, rubbed it in Nicole’s face, and proudly fought with people just for sport. BTG hit pay dirt with actress Trisha Mann-Grant, and they know it — she revs up every scene in Leslie’s black leather and snake necklace, making “messy” a calling card for the ages.

Best Plot Twist: Hayley’s A Black Widow

Hayley seemed like your garden variety “midlife crisis wife” (as Dani called her) when she walked down the aisle with the older and much richer Bill Hamilton. She flirted with him constantly in her tight clothes and full glam, took extra care to make sure he ate right, and seemed to get jealous when he orbited around his first wife. Then Hayley got “pregnant,” was vague about the ultrasound, and “miscarried” — with help from a stranger named Sammy, who Dani later learned was really a guy named Randy who works for Joey Armstrong. But wait, there’s more! Randy is actually Hayley’s cousin and they’ve been working the long con this whole time to set up Bill and kill him for his money. Turns out the “pregnancy” was so Bill would set up a trust fund for their “baby” that Hayley could access, and her interest in his food was because she was secretly poisoning it. There have been a few hiccups in the plan — like when Naomi took a bite of Bill’s tainted birthday cupcake and spit it out, and when Joey caught Hayley and Randy acting suspicious on surveillance camera —  but Hayley repeatedly talks her way out of trouble while whispering to Randy she is dead set on offing her new husband. Kudos to BTG for scripting a twist like Hayley’s “till death do us part” actually being a dire warning, and giving us the amazing pivot from hot trophy wife to murderous gold digger. This shocker also adds valuable layers to Bill’s betrayal of Dani because, as it turns out, the smartest lawyer in Fairmont Crest abandoned his family for nothing.

Worst Couple: Ashley and Derek

This duo was a head-scratcher from day one, sharing no chemistry or believable romance while saddled with clichéd dialogue and dopey stories. Their double dates with crackling real ones Naomi and Jacob only served to shine a light on how mismatched Ashley and Derek were as they awkwardly struggled even to just make conversation with their friends. The pair argued about everything, from her being too busy to him being too messy. (Dishes in the sink? Quelle horreur!)  Even their engagement was dull. Ashley refused to set a date, lied that she couldn’t get off work for her own wedding, and referred to her ring as “a ticking time bomb.” That did not go unnoticed by Derek, who faked paralysis to keep Ashley close, a black mark against her for sure since she’s a nurse who couldn’t tell that her own fiancé could actually feel his legs. One day, Ashley found Derek standing up and realized he was using his condition to manipulate her into marriage (duh). Derek lied that he had kept the secret because he wanted to surprise her at the altar; Ashley removed her engagement ring and stormed off. Their entire breakup took about 20 minutes which indicates BTG knew they had a dud on their hands. Fact: There’s little incentive for viewers to like a couple who don’t even like each other.

Worst Story Payoff: Martin’s A Killer

The build-up of Martin’s secret was terrific. The problem came when it went nowhere after the reveal. We initially learned Bill had cleaned up a “mess” Martin had made, and Vernon and Anita knew about it. Bill, aka “the fixer”, used the info to blackmail the Duprees into coming to his wedding to Hayley, which was properly soapy, as was the slow drip-drip-drip of the secret coming out. Martin finally came clean to his husband Smitty that two years ago, he and Vernon got a flat tire in a rough area and were attacked by two white men uttering racial slurs. Martin wound up killing one and beating the other so badly that Martin’s own father, Ted, had to operate on him. That man, named Kenneth, was paid to disappear but returned to blackmail Martin — which meant Nicole had to be told about this terrible crime involving her son, her husband and her parents that she knew nothing about. That’s where the story petered out: Kenneth was found dead in a park under suspicious circumstances and the crime fell off the radar. Nicole went back to trusting her family. Bill stopped mentioning it to the Duprees or holding it over the their heads. And Martin is now running for reelection with zero fear that this scandal might come out and impact his congressional seat, begging the question, what good is a soap reveal if it doesn’t kick off any major fallout?

Worst Triangle: Eva/Tomas/Kat

The premise was excellent: Two young, beautiful women who just discovered they are half sisters find themselves fighting over the same man. Kat hates Eva for being the product of her father Ted’s long-ago affair with Leslie, and for Eva’s part in the revelation breaking up Kat’s parents’ marriage, and making them romantic rivals on top of that made all the soapy sense in the world. This could have been a sizzling, signature story for the show … if the guy in question was worth being fought over! Instead we got Tomas, a dull, one-note lawyer with no family or friends. Kat lost her virginity to him and confessed that the sex was bad, which didn’t exactly help elevate him to heartthrob status. Tomas confided his inability to please Kat with in her hated half sister, and Eva took that as a challenge and slept with him. In walked Kat to suggest she and Eva could become sisters who “share things” (okay, that was funny) and Tomas emerged from Eva’s bedroom in a towel. Kat called them garbage and stormed out, but Tomas won her back and their sex improved thanks to some kind of magic tryst in a closet (?). Tomas now wants Kat to move in with him and she is hedging, probably because he asked her with the same energy you would ask the post office to hold your mail…. or perhaps because Eva has moved on to Jacob’s smoldering brother, Izaiah, which made Tomas’s stock go down even further since no one else wants him. While the Eva/Kat rivalry remains terrific, the wishy-washy Tomas just dragged it down. He was no match for these powerhouse women, and you simply can’t have an effective triangle with only two solid angles.
