B&B Party Talk

Comments

To get everyone in the spirit, gift bags were filled with Forrester Creations sketch pads, B&B T-shirts, Hector Ramirez (Lorenzo Lamas) Fire Dept. T-shirts, tins of cookies stamped with cast head shots (Weekly got Sean Kanan (Deacon), Maeve Quinlan (Megan) and Lesley-Anne Down (Jacqueline), packs of gum emblazoned with a B&B cast photo, and floatable keychains from Nick’s (Jack Wagner) boat, Shady Marlin.

While the goodies circulated, Weekly spoke with Drew Tyler Bell (Thomas), who was clearly enjoying his first Emmy experience. “This is the most formal event I’ve been to, so I have to behave,” said the latest Bell to enter the soap world. “Everywhere else I got away with crazy behavior; this time I’ve got to act mature.”

As for his on-screen persona, Bell seems to have figured out the intricacies of Thomas’ family history. “Technically [Thomas is] a Marone, but he feels like a Forrester and I think that is what he leans toward, the fashion world. He’s not really into the shipping business. He’s a Forrester at heart, Marone by blood,” said Bell.

And about Thomas’ love life… “Thomas really likes Caitlin, Caitlin really likes Thomas, but it’s not that simple,” Bell says. Already he understands relationship drama.

Kayla Ewell (Caitlin) gets drama, too. The college-age performer has dealt with some heavy emotional scenes during her brief tenure on the show, and she couldn’t be happier. “I’m ecstatic; excited is not the word,” said Ewell. “It’s so weird and it’s fun. You get to glimpse a different life. One second you’re living in college in the dorms with a roommate and your biggest worry is a term paper. Then next second you’re in a new apartment and you have a job and you have to be to work on time. It’s a lot for me, especially traveling to New York. I’ve never traveled by myself and to have this be the first trip I’ve traveled on by myself is unbelievable.”

Ewell wrapped herself in a glittery Roberto Cavalli gown for the Emmy ceremony, which was another joy for her. “I saw that dress on the hanger and I thought, ‘Wow that dress is really cool, I wonder who gets to wear it.’ And Birgit [Muller, B&B’s costume designer] says, ‘Oh, by the way, this is your dress.’ No way you’re going to let me wear that! I feel like a princess when I put it on. It’s lavender and it has clear jewels on it. I’m so excited to wear it.”

Unlike Caitlin, however, Ewell has little designer knowledge of her own. “Caitlin is so into style and I’m the kind of person that if I see it and I like it and it fits good, I’ll wear it. I’m not so into ‘Oh, this designer.’ So I’ve been reading fashion magazines and looking at stuff so I know what I’m talking about. I really have to research it,” she said.

Sydney Penny (Samantha) didn’t do a lot of research before slipping into her dazzling Randi Rahm number. “The last time I went to the Emmys, it was a while ago, they would grab us a dress out of stock and say, ‘Take a taxi.’ So it has changed a little bit in the last few years,” Penny said.

Penny’s role on B&B has also gone though great changes, as she’s gone from a supporting role to a full-fledged front burner storyline. Hector and Samantha’s star-crossed love story “is such a great soap storyline,” she said. “It’s so classic. I’m waiting to have the scenes where one says potatoe and one says potato, because they’re so different. I think that’s going to be fascinating.”

Penny’s on-screen love, Lorenzo Lamas, is enjoying his first contract daytime role. “It’s so much fun to be on a significant program again after years of being out there in the independent film market, struggling to produce movies and to star in them,” Lamas said. “I’ve said it before and I’ll say it to you guys, the show has rescued me in terms of my passion for acting. It really has.”

As for Hector and Sam, Lamas has simple advice for how to keep the new couple on track. “I think as long as Samantha does what he says, they’ll get along fine,” he said, laughing.
