AMC’s Babe in Boyland
On a rare afternoon off, ALL MY CHILDREN’s Alexa Havins takes time to dish Babe’s complicated love life, staying clear of a serial killer and her own growing family.
Soap Opera Weekly: You are a busy little gal over at AMC. Is it hard being in such constant heavy story?
Alexa Havins: We laugh at our scheduling producer because she always feels bad. She’s like, “I don’t mean to kill you, but you dabble.” I do. I am in every set, which is great. It’s fun, but it’s exhausting. Right now, I’m like, “Sleep!” This week I actually don’t know what to do with myself. I went in today and only had to shoot one scene. I was like, “What? Are you sure? What do I do?” (Laughs.) I’m embracing it. I’m actually able to be a wife and a normal person. I can clean and do things I haven’t been able to do for months.
Weekly: This week on AMC Erin dies. How does Babe find out?
Havins: Josh tells her. Babe is at the Chandler mansion. JR is home from the hospital and Babe isn’t letting up. She’s very dedicated to getting through to him. She’s not saying, “Let’s get back together and forget anything ever happened.” It’s more like, “Let’s try to move forward.” They aren’t having an “I love you” moment or anything like that, but she breaks the ice a little bit. They are actually talking, but then Josh busts in. Don’t we have a gate or a security guard at the Chandler mansion? (Laughs.) He walks in and delivers the news of Erin’s passing. Babe is shocked and devastated. It’s too much too take.
Weekly: And being a Fusion girl, Babe is a clear target now, correct?
Havins: Absolutely. It’s like, “Okay, what’s going on?” There is someone after these ladies. Everyone is on high alert. The guys are giving the girls security and personal bodyguards.
Weekly: With all of the danger, I bet Josh is intent on staying by Babe’s side.
Havins: Pretty much. It’s along the lines of, “It’s not about me loving you. I get that you’re not choosing me, but I’m not leaving you alone until I know that you’re safe.” And the only way he can ensure that she’s safe is if he’s there, keeping an eye out. The next day the Fusion girls go into the office because they’re not going to be bowed. They are going to fight and they are there showing an united front. I like that Kendall and Babe have a nice moment. She says, “I’m going to put all our crap aside for the time being because we need to be united in this.”
Weekly: Alicia (Minshew, Kendall) was telling me the Fusion girls hold an awesome press conference.
Havins: Yeah. I felt for her; poor thing had so many words to say. It was a lot, but she kicked ass. It’s a moment where the women come together. It’s nice because with all the chaos with the Kanes, Chandlers and Martins, for a moment Pine Valley comes together. There is something bigger than ourselves. That’s what Pine Valley people get caught up in a lot: themselves. So for one quick second, instead of yelling, being bitchy and pointing fingers, everyone is there to support each other and grieve their friends and family.
Weekly: How does JR play into this for Babe?
Havins: She comes back [to the mansion] and has this sweet moment with him. He’s sleeping and she is crying at his bedside and says, “I need you so much.” Not only is she going through this, but she doesn’t have her rock and best friend to lean on. It’s a lonely place to be. He opens his eyes and almost makes the move to connect — but then he doesn’t.
Weekly: How does he react when he realizes she may be in danger, too?
Havins: To be honest, he lashes out. The next morning she comes in to say, “Goodbye. I’m going to work.” And he pretty much is like, “Are you stupid? You’re going to Fusion?” So his fear is coming through in anger.
Weekly: If he didn’t care, he wouldn’t be concerned.
Havins: Exactly. He totally cares. He’s the one who hires her the bodyguard. She sees that as a really strong step in the right direction. Even though it may be for Little Adam’s mommy, it may also be for the woman that he loves.
Weekly: Enough about Pine Valley. Tell me about the newest additions to the Bruening family.
Havins: We just got two Teacup Yorkies! They are ridiculously cute. I can’t stop staring at them. They’re good little puppies, too. They are brother and sister. I think it’s my cousin’s fault. Lisa just had twins — identical girls — so I was home on Thanksgiving and loving the babies. I was like, “We have to get a dog or something.” So we did! I’ve never had a dog, so I’m enjoying it.
