15 Stars From General Hospital, Young and Restless and Other Soaps Who Appeared on The Cosby Show

Fans of Malcolm-Jamal Warner, who rose to fame playing affable Theo Huxtable on The Cosby Show for the entirety of its 1984-92 run,  are mourning the tragic drowning death of the beloved actor at the age of 54. Did you know that over the course of its eight seasons on NBC, the sitcom featured appearances by many familiar soap names? Here’s a look back at just some of the daytime stars from Days of Our LivesGeneral HospitalThe Young and the Restless and other daytime dramas who made their mark on the show.

1. Phylicia Rashad (Clair Huxtable)

Before taking on the career-making role of the attorney and Huxtable family matriarch, Rashad appeared on One Life to Live from 1983-84 as publicist Courtney Wright.

2. Joseph C. Phillips (Martin Kendall)

On seasons 6, 7, and 8, Phillips portrayed the dashing Navy man who married Denise Huxtable, played by Lisa Bonet. Phillips went on to originate the role of Justus Ward, Edward Quartermaine’s surprise grandson, on General Hospital, from 1994-98. More recently, he popped up on Young and Restless in 2019 as Judge Sanchez, who presided over the custody battle for Christian Newman.

3. Victoria Rowell (Paula)

The first wife of Joseph C. Phillips’s character (and the mother of his adorable daughter, Olivia, played by Raven-Symoné) was portrayed by Victoria Rowell. She made appearances in 1989 and 1990, just prior to being cast in the long-running role of Drucilla Barber Winters on Y&R.

4. Kristoff St. John (David James)

Victoria Rowell’s future Y&R leading man, St. John (ex-Neil Winters), made a one-episode appearance in 1984 as David James, Denise’s boyfriend. His soap career kicked off five years later when he joined the cast of Generations as Adam Marshall.

5. Debbi Morgan (Tracy)

Following her original, Daytime Emmy-winning run on All My Children as Angela “Angie” Baxter Hubbard (1982-90) and her follow-up gig as Chantal Marshall on Generations from 1990-91 (where Kristoff St. John’s Adam was her on-screen brother), Morgan did one episode of The Cosby Show in its final season playing Princeton-trained architect turned photographer Tracy.

6. Dondre T. Whitfield (Robert)

The actor was only 15 when he landed the plum role of Robert, heartthrob boyfriend of Tempestt Bledsoe’s Vanessa Huxtable. “It was the most popular show on television at the time and it was my first job,” he recalled to Soap Opera Digest in 2012. “That was both a blessing and a curse, because where do you go from there?” For Whitfield, the answer was Pine Valley: From 1991-94, he starred on AMC as Terrence Frye. He paid tribute to Warner on Instagram, writing, “My heart is broken, but my assignment is clear-to be, and do all that I can for my brother’s wife and his daughter. To honor the man that he became from the young man that I met on my first job. Malcolm, I love you. Thank you for your friendship and your brotherhood. I will remember every single second we spent together as boys and as men. I’ll miss you forever, brother.”

7. Robert Gossett (Stage Manager)

A two-time Daytime Emmy-winner for his work as Marshall Ashford on GH, a role he began playing in 2021, Gossett played a behind-the-scenes staffer on Dance Mania, a popular TV show Theo attended a taping of on a 1987 episode.

8. Al Freeman, Jr. (Coach Ernie Scott)

Freeman, Jr. — the first Black actor to receive a Daytime Emmy for his work on a daytime drama, who starred on OLTL as Ed Hall from 1972-74 and 1979-85 — guest-starred in the first season of The Cosby Show as Cliff’s former track coach.

9. Rosalind Cash (Dr. Hughes)

Beloved to GH fans for her 1994-95 run as the soulful Mary Mae Ward (who was the grandmother of Joseph C. Phillips’s character, Justus), Cash played a doctor colleague of Cliff’s in 1986.

10. William Christian (Mr. Robertson)

In the show’s first season, Christian appeared on a 1986 episode as Vanessa’s teacher in an advanced science class. Christian went on to star on AMC as Derek Frye (1990-2005 ), and most recently, he did a stint on Days of Our Lives as Lani Price’s drug-dealing birth father, TR Coates.

11. Michael Weatherly (Theo’s Roommate)

Weatherly’s first TV appearance was an uncredited one as Theo’s NYU roommate in 1991. The following year, Loving cast him to play Cooper Alden, and he became a popular leading man on the soap (and later, on prime-time shows like NCIS and Bull.

12. Tracey Ross (Fran)

Passions fans knew her as Dr. Eve Russell from 1999-2008, but her first soap was Ryan’s Hope, where she starred as assistant district attorney Diana Douglas from 1986-87. In 1989, she guested on a Season 6 episode as a grad student in psychology who chatted up Joseph C. Phillips’s Martin alongside her friend Tori. Tori, incidentally, was played by JoAnna Rhinehart, who later appeared on As The World Turns as Jessica Griffin (1995-98).

13. Vanessa Williams (Jade and Cheryl)

Several decades before coming aboard the DAYS cast in 2016 as Valerie Grant, Williams held two separate roles on The Cosby Show. She played Jade in 1984, and Cheryl in 1987. Both of her characters were one-episode love interests for Theo. Following Warner’s death, Williams posted on Instagram, “My scene partner, my friend, the son, the husband, the father…the legacy, that is @malcolmjamalwar I’m gutted like so very many! 💔 Rest in Strength Good Brother! 🙏🏾”

14. Tonya Pinkins (Iris)

Pinkins rose to soap fame with her roles on ATWT (Heather Dalton Foster, 1983-85) and AMC (Livia Frye, 1991-95; 2003-04; 2006-09). In between those gigs, she guest-starred in a 1990 episode as Iris, the former girlfriend of Cliff and Clair’s son-in-law Elvin.

15. Sammy Davis, Jr. (Ray Palomino)

In 1989, the legendary entertainer popped in as the grandfather of an unmarried, pregnant teenager who Cliff tracked down. Davis, Jr. was a huge soap fan who recurred as con artist Chip Warren on OLTL (1980, 1981, 1983) and did a 1982 GH stint as Eddie Phillips, the estranged father of series regular Bryan Phillips, played by Todd Davis.
