Five Things That Happened On February 8 In Soap History

In 1977, Genie Francis debuted on General Hospital as Laura Webber. The future soap opera superstar was a mere 14 years old at the time. Francis told Soap Opera Digest in 2023 that when the show's then-executive producer, Gloria Monty, took her and her father out to lunch to ask for permission to write a bigger storyline for Laura, "I was more than excited; I was definitely dying to show the world what I was capable of doing. I think it might have been the David Hamilton story [Laura’s older lover, whom she accidentally killed], where I finally got to do something really good, and I got to do my best work because Laura flips out and loses her memory and has to go to a psychiatrist to overcome her mental block. I mean, I was loving it!”

In 1980, Eric Braeden debuted on Young and Restless as Victor Newman. Braeden almost turned down the opportunity to play the role, who would become one of the most iconic characters in daytime television history. He recalled to Soap Opera Digest in 2023, "I was playing tennis with my friend Dabney Coleman, and as it usually is when actors get together, he said, ‘So, what are you doing now? What’s up next for you?’ And I said, ‘They offered me a soap. What’s a soap?’ I had no idea; I didn’t watch daytime television. So he says, ‘Do it! You’ll love it.’ And upon that recommendation did I actually go to the interview, because I trust him; he’s a very good actor. I proceeded to the interview over at CBS with [then-Producer] Ed Scott, I think, and [then-Associate Producer] Nancy Wiard and I think [then-Executive Producer] John Conboy. And I thought about it and then agreed to sign on for three months at the longest, so the rest is history.”

In 1988, Erica Kane (Susan Lucci) gave birth to her daughter with Travis, Bianca (Jessica Leigh Falborn), on All My Children. At the time, this was portrayed as Erica becoming a mother for the first time, but later rewrites introduced two previously birthed offspring: Kendall Hart and Joshua Madden. Bianca would grow up to become a central character on the show. As a child, she was played by (among others) Lacey Chabert, and the longest-running Bianca was Eden Riegel, who took over the role in 2000 and won a Daytime Emmy a Outstanding Younger Actress in 2005.

In 2008, Victoria Newman (Amelia Heinle) wed J.T. Hellstrom (Thad Luckinbill) on Young and Restless. The lovebirds were already parents to a young son, Reed, and had overcome quite the obstacle on their road to the altar in the form of Victoria's months-long coma, from which she had only recently emerged. The groom told his bride, "My heart was in my throat when I saw you come down that aisle. Not too long ago, people were wondering if you'd ever wake up. If you'd ever have a chance to know our son. But tonight, you're my miracle. You and our son Reed, who is here to witness all of this. Victoria, I give you my love and my devotion. I promise to be the best husband I can be."  

In 2008, Tamara Braun made her Days of Our Lives debut as Ava Vitali. The actress was already well-known to daytime fans for her run as Carly Corinthos on General Hospital from 2001-05. Braun picked up a Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress for her work as Ava in 2009. While her first stint as Ava only lasted six months, she returned from 2015-16 and again in 2020, this time for a longer stay.
