In 1983, Catherine Mary Stewart exited Days of Our Lives as Kayla. She had debuted the previous year, and her character was romantically interested in Chris Kositchek, played by Josh Taylor. In 1997, Taylor returned to the show in the recast role of Roman Brady, Kayla's big brother. Mary Beth Evans, who assumed the role of Kayla when the character returned to Salem in 1986, recalled to Soap Opera Digest in 2015, "Josh told me that when Catherine Mary Stewart played the role, Kayla had a thing for his character. It was funny because I look at Josh as my TV brother, so thinking of Kayla in a romance with him is like, 'Whoa!' "

In 2005, Van Hansis debuted on As The World Turns as Luke Snyder, Lily's son with her ex-husband, Damian Grimaldi.
