Wedding Day Disasters
The double wedding of Ryan and Greenlee and Reese and Bianca is poised to join the ranks of Pine Valley weddings gone awry. Here are 10 other ceremonies that didn’t quite go off without a hitch.
Janet and Trevor, 1994
Janet tricked Trevor into romancing her in 1991 by tossing her sister, Natalie, down a well, then assuming her identity (and her place in Trevor’s bed). When her ruse was exposed, Janet was sent to prison, and Trevor raised Amanda, the baby that resulted from the severe case of mistaken identity. In ’94, Janet underwent experimental plastic surgery in order to gain early release from prison. Calling herself Jane Cox, she wooed Trevor — but on their wedding day, her true identity was exposed, in large part thanks to an attack on Janet by Harold the Dog. Needless to say, the nups were cancelled.Tad and Dixie, 1990
Their first marriage had been torn apart by Palmer, who successfully convinced Dixie that Tad was cheating on her. But Tad and Dix quickly found their way back to each other and planned to remarry. The happy day arrived, but ended in serious tragedy: Billy Clyde Tuggle, who was obsessed with Dixie, lured Tad to a bridge that he had rigged with explosives. In their ensuing struggle, Billy Clyde was killed and Tad was presumed dead for three years.
Leo and Greenlee, 2002
Greenlee and Leo’s wedding day was marred in a big, bad way when the ceremony was crashed by lowlife associates of his drug lord mother, Vanessa, who shot Greenlee’s father, Roger, dead. Before he took his final breath, Roger revealed to Greenlee that he had a mistress — her best friend, Simone. Despite these dual blows, Leo whisked Greens off to the boathouse, where they exchanged their vows with only David and Anna in attendance.
Hayley and Mateo, 1997
Mateo’s buddy Tanner Jordan arrived in Pine Valley and immediately set his site on Hayley, who was set to become Mateo’s wife. While on a flight with Hayley, Tanner fixed it to so the plane would have to make an emergency landing, then drugged Hayley and convinced her that they’d slept together. When her wedding day arrived, Hayley was so beset with guilt that she ended up confessing her supposed infidelity to Mateo and leaving him at the altar. (They were married later in the year after Tanner admitted that he’d lied about their supposed dalliance).
Erica and Jackson, 2003
Just when it looked like these on-again, off-again lovers were finally going to make it official, a long-buried secret exploded their happiness. In his youth, Jack had unknowingly impregnated Mary, who raised daughter Greenlee as Roger Smythe’s. Mary reset her sights on Jack, and, worried about losing him, Erica didn’t tell Jack the truth about Greenlee when she discovered it herself. Mary arranged for Greens to find out about Jack, and Greens crashed the wedding, exposing not only her biological tie to Jack but Erica’s cover-up of it. No “I do’s” were exchanged that day.
Sean and Cecily, 1989
The night before she was to wed Sean, who had eyes only for her trust fund, Cecily overheard her future husband admitting to her mother, Bitsy, whom he’d secretly been bedding, that he’d wooed Cecily for her money. At the altar, when Sean expected an “I do,” what he got instead was a “No!” After publicly lambasting both her groom and her mom, Cecily fled the church with her bachelorette status intact.
Ryan and Annie, 2007
Before they ever met, Ryan and Annie shared a biological daughter, Emma, thanks to Ryan’s sperm donation. After a whirlwind courtship, they tied the knot at Wildwind, but the reception would have turned even the most docile new wife into a raging Bridezilla: Ryan’s not-so-ex-wife, Greenlee, showed up and promptly had him arrested for bigamy — turns out she’d never filed their divorce papers.Liza and Adam, 1996
Adam wanted Brooke; Liza wanted Tad. So they teamed up to get their exes to become their currents by pretending to be headed for the altar, which they thought would make Tad and Brooke wild with jealousy. But when the big day arrived, no one objected when the minister got to the whole “speak now or forever hold your peace” bit. Adam said “I do,” expecting that Liza would them call things off. Instead, with dollar signs in her eyes, she became the latest Mrs. Chandler — a disaster indeed, in Adam’s eyes (until he fell in love with her, that is).Brooke and Edmund, 2002
After years apart and multiple marraiges to others, Brooke and Edmund found their way back to the altar … just as Maria, his presumed dead wife, found her way back to Pine Valley! Brooke had actually come face-to-face with Maria weeks before, but because she had amnesia, she was calling herself Maureen, and rather than risk losing Edmund, Brooke had swallowed her suspicions about the woman. Edmund couldn’t believe his eyes when he caught his first glimpse of Maria. A breakup with Brooke, and the annulment of their minutes-old marriage, soon followed.
Stuart and Gloria, 1993
Poor Stuart. Until Marian came along, he was perpetually unlucky in love (his beloved wife, Cindy, having succumbed to AIDS). But nurse Gloria stole his heart, and Stuart was delighted when their wedding day finally arrived. Unfortunately, she was in love with another man — his identical twin, Adam, to be precise. Unable to deny it any longer, she left Stuart at the altar.
