Trophy Life

Comments

In April, the Stanley Cup, NHL’s top trophy, embarked on a tour that included “dining” with Kurt Russell and Susan Sarandon, performing at the Grand Ole Opry and dropping in on Springfield to break up one of GUIDING LIGHT’s favorite couples. Tom Pelphrey (Jonathan) sheds some light on the Cup’s visit. “The NHL came to the studio for a couple hours to do a promotional thing with the Stanley Cup. They’re trying to get fans back — they lost some viewers because of the strike — so they’re doing this whole Stanley Cup tour, and they asked if GL wanted to do anything with it,” begins Pelphrey. “Ellen [Wheeler, executive producer] said, ‘Yeah, of course,’ and wrote a Tammy/Jonathan scene. They brought the Cup to the studio, which is pretty cool, and me and Steph [Gatschet] did the Tammy and Jonathan scene. [In it], Tammy is leaving Jonathan because she’s in love with ‘Stanley’ now. It’s funny. He comes in and Tammy’s sitting there with Stanley. She’s got her arm around the Cup and she’s like, ‘I like him because he’s so well-traveled.’ It’s all hockey puns, basically just about Tammy leaving Jonathan for Stanley.”Jonathan, naturally, doesn’t react well to Tammy cheating on him. “He flips out. I was supposed to choke the Stanley Cup, but the handler said, ‘You can’t choke the Stanley Cup!’ At one point, I pick up a hockey stick. Ellen had a great idea to tape a hockey stick to the cart the cup is on, so it looked like the Stanley Cup had a stick and the handler said, ‘I’m sorry, the Stanley Cup can’t be violent back.’ I called it a diva! We can’t do anything with it, but it’s a big deal. It’s the only trophy in sports that there’s only one of.”
It’s also the oldest trophy in professional sports, but that didn’t stop Pelphrey from having fun with it. “I touched it, I fondled it, I licked it [laughs]. I didn’t lick it. I’m not a big hockey fan, but I tell you what, that thing’s impressive.”To see Tammy and Jonathan’s scene with the Stanley Cup, visit www.nhl.com/features/gallery/celebs/index.html
