Singing in Her Soul
Although Krystal’s always ready to comfort her daughter, Marissa, as she tries to do this week on ALL MY CHILDREN following David’s death, Pine Valley hasn’t really benefited from portrayer Bobbie Eakes‘ other talent: singing.
Eakes is performing in the upcoming musical revue Kander & Ebb’s The World Goes ‘Round, a benefit for the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center’s Lily Tomlin/Jane Wagner Cultural Arts Center, on Oct. 7, 9 and 10. And she sings regularly with Kathy Brier (ex-Marcie, OLTL) and Kassie DePaiva (Blair, OLTL) as the Divas of Daytime TV.
In fact, “I was a singer first,” Eakes points out, “and started acting afterward. I’ve been blessed — I’ve been able to do both; for the 21 years I’ve been doing soaps, I’ve always kept singing.”
Eakes first sang with a group called Big Trouble, and was signed to Epic Records. It was “an all-girl band,” she recalls. “We did our little thing; we were on American Bandstand [laughs]…I think it was the last season.”
Unfortunately, there was big trouble ahead for the group. “We broke up after our first album,” Eakes notes. “There was internal friction — not between members of the band, but with management. We decided to part ways, but it was a lot of fun.”
Her AMC schedule allows her to continue singing. “Most of the time, it’s worked out that I’ve been able to [sing] on the weekends. I’ve traveled and performed, and it really helps energize me. If you get stuck in a rut, then your work suffers; I love being able to get out there and mix it up a little bit. When I come back to the studio, I have a fresh outlook on life and work.”
Eakes might get to spotlight her singing voice on AMC soon — after all, as the owner of Krystal’s restaurant and bar, she’s in charge of the menu and the entertainment!
