Ryan’s Reproductivity
For a guy who originally didn’t want kids, even going so far as to (seemingly) undergo a vasectomy, AMC’s Ryan is one fertile fella! In honor of Madison’s pregnancy, we look back at his reproductive history.
1998: Hungry for cash, Ryan (a.k.a. Donor 517) donated his sperm to a local clinic; Liza was nearly inseminated with his sample.
2001: As she and Ryan neared a reconciliation, Gillian learned that she was pregnant by Jake. Ryan promised to love the child as if it was his own. Alas, she miscarried. When Gillian was tragically killed after remarrying Ryan, he slept with Liza to dull his pain and she became pregnant. She, too, miscarried.
2004: Greenlee, now married to Ryan, told him she wanted a baby.
2005: After an arduous trauma involving his brother Jonathan, Ryan decided against having kids, despite Greenlee’s desire to start a family. He secretly underwent a vasectomy — but crafty Greens became pregnant anyway, having gotten her hands on some of the sperm he had donated years earlier.
Convinced he would be a menace to the baby and angry at his wife for her deception, Ryan faked his own death. Greens then miscarried but intended to conceive again, and when she learned she couldn’t carry a baby to term, Kendall volunteered to be the surrogate. When the only way to become pregnant with the last of Ryan’s sperm required Kendall to use her own egg, she did so behind Greens’s back, intending to hand the resulting babe over to Greens without disclosing its true biological roots. Ryan revealed himself to be alive and was shocked by the news of Kendall’s pregnancy, and even more stunned when the truth about whose egg had been fertilized came out.
2006: Ryan and Greenlee’s marriage was over by the time Kendall birthed Spike, but Ryan and Kendall (and Zach) had all fallen in love with the baby by then. Ryan befriended Annie and her daughter, Emma.
2007: Ryan and Annie were both floored to discover that Ryan was the biological father of Emma (Annie had gone to a sperm bank to conceive). Ryan wed Annie.
2008: Annie learned that Ryan’s long-ago vasectomy hadn’t actually happened. Desperate to hang on to Ryan in the wake of several difficulties in their marriage, she got pregnant, but miscarried.
2010: Ryan broke up with Madison to reunite with Greenlee. Mad was stunned to learn she was expecting Ryan’s baby.
