Risky Business

David’s scheme to help Greenlee win the battle for Fusion takes a dangerous turn this week when, in an effort to have Erica’s plane grounded away from Pine Vallley for mechanical reasons, he pays someone to tamper with the aircraft — which crashes when La Kane insists on taking off. Susan Lucci (Erica) guides us through the action.Erica’s woes get underway when she travels to West Virginia to see a friend of Palmer’s, someone the late Cortlandt patriarch had entrusted with sensitive will-related information, as well as a personal note for La Kane. “She was very touched by it and she calls Opal as soon as she’s read it,” begins Lucci. “She says, ‘I’m on my way home and I’m going to come right by and tell you all about it, Opal.’ ”

That’s when Opal breaks the news that in Erica’s absence, the press have been having a field day with allegations (courtesy of David and Greenlee) that Erica has been skimming profits off the charitable Miranda line. “She tells Erica, ‘No, you’ve got to get to Fusion right away.’ Erica hears her tone of voice and says, ‘Why, what’s going on?’ Erica scrolls down on her Blackberry and she can tell that she’s been accused of something that she didn’t do.”
So, not even the most cautious of pilots stood a chance of keeping Erica from racing back to Pine Valley. “She’s not thinking at all,” Lucci sighs. “She just wants to get back to Pine Valley as quickly as possible to confront the situation. Her reasoning is that there was not even a reason to file a flight plan because they were just going back to where they came from. All she wanted was to leave quickly. He says, ‘We’re hitting some turbulence’ and there’s a lot of turbulence and he announces, ‘Prepare for emergency landing.’ She looked out the window and they are way up in the mountains. She thinks they’re going to die, but she’s not thinking about [whether anyone tampered with the plane].”

La Kane does survive the crash, but her problems are far from over. “The crash is so bad,” she shudders. “They crash into a house” — belonging to Michael Nouri‘s new alter ego, Caleb — “and the house is demolished. She’s in the plane and she sees a shadow figure come in and walk past her to try to save the pilot. He drags the pilot out of the wreckage and she’s afraid that the plane is going to explode but she’s wedged into her seat.” The shadowy figure (Caleb) does return, the actress assures. “He cuts her out of her seat but after that, that’s it. She has to survive on her own.”
