PASSIONS Hits Lucky No. 7!

Soap Opera Digest: Seven years ago, did you ever think you’d be working with a mermaid?
Kim Johnston Ulrich (Ivy): To be honest, it was funny because I distinctly remember auditioning for the show and I just thought it was another soap opera. Then, when I started reading scripts, I was like, ‘She levitates through the air! What?’ Then, I realized we had a witch on the show. I thought, ‘Oh, that’s cool. I love DARK SHADOWS.’ I was one of the first ones who, as everyone was trying to justify everything, turned to someone and said, ‘You know what? We have a witch and doll on the show; pretty much anything goes.’ We have to realize that Harmony is an alternate universe. It’s its own little bubble of reality. You go with that, and it’s okay. I read a lot of sci-fi and there are always alternate universes. This is one of them. Back then, I had no idea there would be a mermaid on the show. Nor did I know that Alistair would be eternally evil. Who saw that one coming? I thought he was just a bad guy, not Satan himself [laughs].Digest: It’s been seven years, but do you remember your first scene?

Tracey Ross (Eve): Wow! Seven years. How about that? Time flies. My first scene was [on location] in Oxnard [CA] at the carnival. I think I was walking into the carnival with TC, and Sam came over and asked for some help. So TC walked away with him and I walked over and found Grace.
Digest: Did you have a favorite storyline back then?

Ross: I loved the Ivy and Julian stuff in the beginning episodes. Kim is such an awesome diva. She looks so good wearing fur coats and great clothes and jewelry. She was so good at being the slime of the earth. Julian was so horrible.

Digest: Did you watch any of the earlier episodes when they aired on the SCI FI Channel?

Galen Gering: Oh, no, I couldn’t. It was on at, like, 6 in the morning. I heard they were wildly entertaining. I’m sure it looks like a typical soap on location, like video [laughs].
Digest: Can you remember your first scene?
Kelli McCarty (Beth): I remember it exactly because it was also my audition scene. It was Beth in the Book Café, of course. She was wearing a little apron and Luis and Chief Bennett came in. Beth and Luis hadn’t seen each other in years, maybe since they broke up in high school. Beth is like, ‘Hey, Luis. I haven’t seen you in a long time.’ Next thing you know, Luis and Beth are sitting down, having a chat and she’s asking him about Sheridan. She says she can’t believe that he would ever date a Crane. Then, he asks her to go to the Lobster Shack, which Beth was pretty excited about.
Digest: Can you believe that was seven years ago?
McCarty: No. I don’t think any of us can. Galen and I were talking awhile ago about how many changes have happened with the cast. We were talking about all of the silliness, not just the storylines, but all of the craziness we’ve had on the set. It’s been so much fun.
