Q: How long does it take you to get ready for a big awards show?
Marcil: To get dressed? It takes me about an hour and a half completely, from getting in the shower to walking out the door in what I’m wearing. I’m really big on getting ready fast because…I get dressed and I leave. I never check out what I’m wearing or change or do any of that because I just feel like if I’m thinking too much about the way I look, I’ll never have a fun evening. And to me, it’s really all about the people who we know have worked their butts off all year. It’s about them and them accepting their awards and getting the credit that they deserve and being able to thank the people who helped them. It’s not about me and what dress I’m in.
Q: Are you still getting recognized as Brenda? Do you get recognized now more as Sam? Or just Vanessa?
Marcil: I feel really lucky that I actually am almost, like 98% of the time people call me Vanessa and I’m recognized as Vanessa. I’m happy about that because I wouldn’t want to be typecast just in one character. But I do have people once they say Vanessa, you know, LAS VEGAS is such a big hit right now, so usually is about LAS VEGAS right now, but people always mention Brenda somewhere in there. And that will always make me happy. I’ll always want to be recognized as Brenda for my whole life because she’s truly one of the greatest things that ever happened to me.
Q: So when you’re home watching an awards show, during what part are you most likely to get up and go to the fridge?
Marcil: The part where the host is talking (laughs).Q: So how are we going to keep people from doing that?Marcil: Well, I think we’re pretty safe. The thing is that people watch these shows because the same reason why I watch them: I want to see who won and what they have to say and who they’re going to thank. I want to see if they’re going to thank their boyfriend or their girlfriend, or their wife. I love when Tom Hanks is like choked up and crying when he won one of his Academy Awards thanking his wife, you know, they’ve been married forever. That’s the kind of stuff I love because I’m sappy. So with that said, that’s going to be a big part of my hosting. I’m going to keep that in mind, that people are really there to see the people who they love to watch all year and see who won because that’s the most exciting part.
Q: You said you were going to be doing some unconventional things. Does that include an opening montage?
Marcil: I’m going to be doing my whole opening montage naked to try to keep everybody watching until we get to the announcement of all the awards. But there will be those little black boxes over me.
Q: Should we take that seriously?
Marcil: No (laughs). I definitely have something interesting planned to do and to say – and only interesting in the sense that I’ve never seen anyone do or say it before. But I definitely want to make sure that the evening stays about the winners and the people who’ve worked really hard and the people that we’re honoring.
