OLTL’s Musical Menagerie
Soap Opera Weekly: You just had Tito Puente Jr. at Capricorn Jan. 30. How do you match performers with characters?
Paul Glass: We try to cater to everyone, which is always difficult, but each style of music plays to a certain segment of the story. It was pretty seamless with Tito Puente Jr. and Antonio’s new club. Sometimes, it’s just hard to find the right marriage.
Weekly: Is it hard to keep the ideas, like the Search and Destroy contest at Ultra Violet, fresh, too?
Glass: We did have some karaoke and we had [Riley’s band] Midnight Logic on for a while. I think that it brings a lot to the audience, but it’s always best when it balances a story. When we had Simply Red on the show [in 2004], it was an important Valentine moment. It’s the same thing with all the music on the show. We try to give everything a different flavor because it’s an hour every day and it’s five days a week. We try to keep it evolving.
Weekly: So if you could bring in music for Viki, Clint and Dorian’s storyline, what would it be like?
Glass: Robin Strasser (Dorian) loves Simply Red. We had Chris Botti on the show, and that was a jazz thing. Reba McEntire has been on. Little Richard‘s been on for Bo and Nora — and that would be big, if we could get him to come back and do another wedding for them, but I don’t think that’s going to happen. Erykah Badu was huge. Her grandmother was a fan of the show, and part of the deal was that we flew her grandmother in to sit on set. I feel very fortunate to have Lifehouse [coming up], because this song [“You and Me”] is enormous. To have them on the show is really good for us.
