Summer is traditionally the time to get out of Oakdale and head for the tropics. In 2002, Katie and Simon went to Avanya to help save Rose’s pop, Joe. But Katie was in for a bigger surprise: Donovan, her husband’s devious doppelganger.
Simon was still stuck in Avanya when a newly mature Katie agreed to donate part of her liver to save sick sister Margo (Ellen Dolan, with Scott Holmes as Tom). Simon returned just in time to make an emotional declaration of love. 
By her first anniversary with Simon, Katie was already worried that he’d desert her — just like in this frontier-era fantasy sequence, which began with a proposal and ended with a young husband leaving his bride forever to explore the gold rush.
By the time the summer of 2003 had rolled around, Katie’s sad prophecy had come true — Simon was gone. The stubborn wife headed to Australia, determined to track him down. A lovesick Mike (Mark Collier) followed, and they ended up getting kidnapped by one of Simon’s enemies. 
Having chosen Simon over Mike, Katie really had no right to be jealous when his suspicious ex, Pilar (Daniella Alonso), arrived in 2004. But as Katie pointed out, she can’t help how she feels — and that’s pretty much how she has always lived her life.
