It’s Only My Opinion For The Soap Week Ending February 21

Exes Mark The Spot: (From l.) B&B’s Ridge (Thorsten Kaye) and Brooke (Katherine Kelly Lang), Y&R’s Summer (Allison Lanier) and Kyle (Michael Mealor) and GH’s Carly (Laura Wright) and Sonny (Maurice Benard) should be played together for maximum soapy drama.
What happens when most people see an ex-lover? Either their heart skips a beat, or a feeling of dread comes over them. Soaps should be like that, too — cross exes every day in the messiest way possible!
Joining Y&R’s Phyllis with her ex, Billy, at his latest venture, Abbott Communications, makes much more sense than having her sniff after the absent Danny for so long, and her Valentine’s Day dream about Billy was a good hint of what’s to come. I wish Billy talked to Jack about Phyllis, though. If Billy told his brother (aka Phyllis’s ex-husband) that Phyllis called him 15 times while he was on a romantic getaway with Sally in Paris, Jack would yell “Run!” and he’d be right.
Phyllis’s daughter, Summer, ditched her lackluster relationship with Chance and is sticking her nose into ex-husband Kyle’s romance with her cousin, Claire, with promising results.
Summer (observing them with Victor): “Look how miserable Kyle looks.”
Daniel: “Why do you care so much if you’re not jealous?”
Indeed. All of a sudden, Summer is pushing for her and Kyle to do things “as a family” with Harrison and getting her nose out of joint when Claire calls. Kyle and Summer have a messy history (divorcing each other twice — and remember when she gave part of her liver to Kyle’s wife, Lola?) so there’s good drama to be mined there. Summer is positively gleeful at their mutual grandfather Victor’s disapproval of Claire dating Kyle since The Mustache had no problem when she was with Kyle.
Summer: “Grampa sees Claire as a delicate little flower he needs to protect. Kyle is asking for trouble if he continues on this path with Claire.”
Daniel: “You’re radiating Mom vibes right now.”
Summer: “You better be exaggerating when you compare me to her.”
Wrong! Phyllis vibes are exactly what’s needed to liven up Kyle and Claire. The gold standard is their parents/grandparents —Jack/Diane and Victor/Nikki — who were all married to each other and snark at every opportunity. Victor positively seethes when Nikki’s ex-husband Jack comes up in conversation, so forget about it if Claire marries Kyle and they become in-laws again. Juicy!
Brooke vibes only for Ridge on B&B, which is hard to understand because he always thinks the worst of her. Even when she explained that she only took the CEO job at Forrester to protect the company, he called her a traitor and ran straight back to Taylor. Despite that.…
Brooke (to Ridge): “I’m still your Logan. Come back to me!”
Ridge’s heart beats for whatever woman is agreeing with him at the moment… which is more a sign of true ego than true love. He’s got nerve calling Carter out for the series of women he’s dated considering Ridge’s own track record (13 marriages).
Ridge: “You fall in love so hard, and you don’t see the red flags. Not with Zoe, not with Quinn, not with Maya.”
Carter: “What Hope and I have is real.”
Ridge: “She wanted to beat Steffy.”
The Hope/Steffy rivalry could be even more volatile if B&B played the exes they have in common. Where’s Liam? And where’s his father, Bill Spencer? Surely Dollar Bill has heard that his adored ex-wife, Brooke, has been dumped again by “the dressmaker.” Come get your girl and jazz up this story!
There aren’t a lot of OG exes to run into each other on DAYS since most front-burner couples are new. I sure do miss Nicole, who had married or slept with practically every man on the show (talk about dread when you run into someone!). There are no major exes to upend Rafe/Jada, Chanel/Johnny, or Holly/Tate, and you can’t count Alex because none of his former lovers mean anything to that shameless hound dog (who has slept with Chanel, Allie, Kristen, Sloan, Gwen, Theresa, Joy, and Stephanie in two-and-a-half years).
Belle and EJ are growing on me because 1) they have chemistry, and 2) Sami will lose her mind when she learns her sister is bedding her former husband again. Belle’s brother actually got her to admit her current affair is a mistake.
Brady: “You know what I’m not hearing? ‘Sleeping with EJ is a very wise and healthy decision.’ What’s going on? You are allowed to have a one-night stand with someone other than your sister’s ex or the guy who tried to steal your brother’s baby.”
Belle: “There are a million reasons why EJ is terrible for me. There’s this attraction between us. He’s a puzzle I need to solve.”
Brady: “This is worse than I thought.”
The funniest was Belle claiming that her eyes are “wide open” with dastardly EJ in the same episode that EJ agreed to let Rachel hold Ava hostage at Aremid and then plotted with Fake Rafe while he has the real Rafe locked away. So that’s a no, Belle.
I’ve been harping endlessly about GH never crossing ex-marrieds Sonny and Nina, so that was a welcome scene at Bobbie’s Diner (which Carly owns!) when she approached his table.
Nina: “I know Michael and I have had our differences, but he’s been in my prayers.”
Sonny: “There’s a part of me that wants to tell you everything that’s going on and there’s another part that thinks you will go straight to Willow, Ava. Even Drew. Everybody that you’re close to, I’m up against.”
Nina: “Things are terrible between our children right now.”
Another reason to cross them! What’s “going on” with Sonny is a heart ailment that he’s hiding from all his exes. He tried to convince Carly that he gave Ava 50/50 custody of Avery because the explosion at his penthouse made it harder for him to get full custody, but she didn’t buy it.
Sonny: “You act like you know me better than I know myself.”
Carly: “I do know you. I think you’re worried about something.”
Bingo. Carly’s unnatural attachment to Jason caused Sonny to tell her to leave the situation with Sasha alone, but Carly’s face told us she will not be leaving it alone. Meanwhile, Jason was at the police station with Anna, who was begging him not to kill Cyrus (for murdering Sam) before she can arrest him.
Jason: “Whatever happens to Cyrus, your office is going to respect you for the same reasons I do: Your strength, your courage, your willingness to put yourself on the line.”
Anna: “I understand why you want to kill Cyrus.”
Jason: “I know you do. I’m not sure there is anybody else in my life that understands that like you do.”
Anna: “Don’t let Carly hear you say that.”
Ha! The drama is built-in when all the women in Jason’s life know Carly is insanely possessive about him but still buzz around. The strong ones like Anna and Liz (and Sasha?) don’t care.
Jason: “Carly accepts me and loves me, but you understand me.”
Anna: “That’s because we are alike.”
AND YOU SHARED A KISS IN SOMALIA AND IT’S VALENTINE’S DAY.
Oh sorry, am I yelling? Play it!
Hey. It’s only my opinion.
