Inspired Lyrics
In the days leading up to Sandy and Tammy’s wedding, viewers couldn’t help but notice the catchy tune that played every time Tammy and Jonathan locked eyes. Kaci Brown‘s “Unbelievable” served as “Jammy’s” first theme song, although according to Cutler, the show originally used an underscore as the couple’s theme.”One of our producers found ‘Unbelievable’,” says Cutler. “We had a licensing deal where we were able to use it for 15 episodes, so it temporarily became their song.” The licensing deal explains why “Unbelievable” was heard so much during that storyline, but what happened when the 15 episodes were up? “The same producer is a huge Marc Broussard fan,” explains Cutler, “and she came up with ‘Hope For Me Yet.’ [Generally, if a song is picked] and a producer is involved, the writers actually write scripts to work with those songs. Sometimes they have songs in mind and once they are licensed, scripts are written using them. So, we got great usage out of ‘Unbelievable’ and ‘Hope For Me Yet.’ And then, that was sort of over.”So, now what? In a recent montage, a song was played that struck a chord with viewers, who clamored to know about the strangely familiar lyrics. “I was scoring an episode where Jonathan said, ‘Can you love me when the lights are on [to Tammy]?’ ” says Cutler, “It just sounded so musical to me, so I’m giving myself the conception credit. I called one of our composers, Brian Siewert, who does a lot of songs for us. I said, I want to write a song that’s called, ‘Can You Love Me (With The Lights On).’ It just sounded like a song. It took him awhile to actually find the right voice, but we took the line from the writers, and I was inspired because it was so thematic to their [Tammy and Jonathan’s] problem. The first time we played it [on 1/24], it was a montage that covered more people, but it was written for Tammy and Jonathan.”Siewert’s song [co-written by Angela Lauer and Tim Lauer] isn’t yet available for purchase. Siewert, however, assures fans that it’s “going to be featured in an [upcoming] big moment of the show.” Simultaneously, ‘Can You Love Me (With The Lights On)’ will be available for download on iTunes.
