GL: My Summer Vacation
With the dog days of summer behind them, GUIDING LIGHT actors tell Weekly “what I did on my summer vacation.”
Ricky Paull Goldin (Gus)
“It’s been an amazing summer. I took a couple of weeks off the middle, so when you do that they slow you down [in your shooting schedule] a week or two before and a week or two after. I’ve just been out on my boat, taking out different groups every weekend — people from the show or other friends. It’s kind of like the Rat Pack. We go out there and cruise around and drink margaritas and sip martinis.”
Michael O’Leary (Rick)
“Grant [Aleksander, ex-Phillip] and I just played golf last week. He did pretty well, and I did horribly. We did what we traditionally do, which is: I drive out to his neck of the woods and we play golf, then we sit in his backyard and have a frozen margarita and just catch up, then go out and have dinner. In some respects it’s like he never left [the show].”
John Driscoll (Coop)
“I had my family come to visit for the first time. My parents have yet to come up here, but my brother and sister-in-law came up, and they survived, so I think eventually the parents will come up. I’ve wanted to take it easy and enjoy summer in New York, focus on the apartment a little bit. I was able to get some paintings and put them up on the walls. I’ve been in my apartment for a year and a half, and I hadn’t done anything with it, so I’m finally starting to add some life to it.”
Michelle Ray Smith (Ava)
“The [American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s Out of the Darkness] Walk was such a journey. We started at 8:30 p.m. and walked all night long. Just seeing 1,300 people there with pictures of their loved ones, sisters and brothers and cousins on their on their shirts…. It’s amazing how many people are touched by this. It was 7 1/2 hours for us to walk it, and we did the whole thing. [My boyfriend] Brian and my sister, who is 16, finished it. You go through every range of emotion when you’re walking. We were crying at the end and hugging each other. Theovernight.org has a list of local walks. There are tons of them coming up all over the country. There’s one [Oct. 15, in Riverside Park], which would be a great time to do a walk in New York.”
Tina Sloan (Lillian)
“My son is in Iraq right now, so I’m not bouncing away from home as much. We go to this wonderful place called Fishers Island, which is off the coast of New London, Conn., and I played some golf and tennis. My husband and I went to Michigan and went to some weddings, but my traveling is usually done in January and February.”
Robert Bogue (Mallet)
“I just got back from a family vacation. I went to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. That was lovely and peaceful and relaxing. I actually got back in the water, scuba diving, which I hadn’t done in six years. I dove in three shipwrecks, which was really exciting. The kids loved the beach. They played in the sand all day. It’s great as a parent, because you just plop down a chair and read and they are in and out of the water all day.”
Jordan Clarke (Billy)
“My summer vacation was spent painting my house and getting my vegetable garden in shape. [My house is] right on the edge of the field of a farmer who grows feed corn, so from May to October I sit back and watch the corn grow.”
