General Hospital Exclusive: Kelly Thiebaud Talks Britt and Lucas, Real-Life Friendship with Van Hansis
Lucas and Britt have been at each other’s throats for years on General Hospital — but the ice has been steadily melting as they work together to take down Sidwell and Cullum. While Britt’s friendship with Lucas has been a gradual one, Kelly Thiebaud (Britt) says that she had an instant connection behind the scenes with Van Hansis (Lucas).
Friendly Fire
“Van is just amazing,” beams Thiebaud. “I loved him right out of the gate. When we started working together, we had this intense medical scene that we were both really nervous about because of all the medical jargon we had to say. He said something really funny during rehearsal and I was like, ‘Oh, I like this guy, he’s funny!’ Our relationship just blossomed from there and we’ve become friends outside of the show. We hang out often and have so much fun together. He’s just hilarious!”
The actress’s fondness for her co-star can sometimes make it hard to stay in character during their scenes. “We giggle a lot,” Thiebaud grins. “We have to remind ourselves, ‘This is a serious scene we’re doing! The stakes are high, we can’t be giggling!'”
Despite that obstacle, “I love, love working with him,” the actress declares. “I’m really excited that Britt and Lucas are going in the direction of becoming besties, too! That makes me really happy.”
There is one person in the Port Charles universe who is likely not to be so embracing of Britt and Lucas’s newfound kinship — Brad (Parry Shen), Britt’s longtime BFF and Lucas’s ex-husband. “Brad is not going to be happy with me at all,” Thiebaud teases in character.
Thiebaud is pleased that GH fans dig the growing bond between the two doctors. “The viewers seem to be enjoying it and I love that,” she says. “I think they just have a natural chemistry, the two characters. It’s a fun dynamic, because they acknowledge that they hate each other, but yet they can’t stop themselves from liking each other. It’s this weird thing of, ‘God, I hate you, I want nothing to do with you, but at the same time, I can’t help but kind of giggle when you’re around.’ It’s like they’re naturally being pulled together; even though they want to resist it, they can’t. That’s been really fun to play.”
In the current storyline, Lucas and Britt will take any chance they get to crack a smile. They are both in turmoil — Lucas because his lover, Marco (Adrian Anchondo), was murdered, likely by Cullum (Andrew Hawkes), and Britt because she is being forced to work for Cullum and Sidwell (Carlo Rota) in exchange for the medication that is keeping her Huntington’s at bay (among other woes). “Because of all this stuff that happened, Lucas and Britt now share secrets and they have gone through some pretty heavy experiences together,” Thiebaud notes. “It’s really bonded them together.”
