Five Minutes With Robert Newman
Soap Opera Weekly: What responses have you received to the latest Josh and Reva reunion?
Robert Newman: For the most part, I’ve gotten some nice e-mails. Fans were concerned because they get those snippets of things on the Internet and then they think they know what it’s going to be. They were like, “I can’t believe they’re getting divorced again. Is this going to be wedding No. 4?” I had written a piece to my fan club, without giving anything away, and just said to wait and see. And they did. They all sent me back pieces saying, “Thanks for calming our fears and, wow, that was amazing!” It was a good show.
Weekly: How do you feel about Reva keeping her cancer from Josh?
Newman: It’s going to be dependent on how they write it. Right now Josh and Reva are happy, which I get tired of after a few weeks.
Weekly: Jonathan suggested that Cassie is developing feelings for Josh. What do you think?
Newman: I think they’re just playing with the fans. I don’t know if they’re going there or not. I’ve always liked the relationship between Josh and Cassie. The idea of them crossing the line one steamy night or locked in a freezer or whatever, that would be messy, but messy is good. I think people do things that are out of character in real life all the time. If that were to happen, if it were done well and set up right, that would open the door for some interesting, weird scenes to happen. We’d see where it goes. I like weird.
Weekly: How do you like working with Nicole Forester (Cassie)?
Newman: She’s the nicest person in the universe. She knits, which kind of freaks me out and I find endearing at the same time. Coming into the character, literally one day [after] Laura [Wright, now Carly, GENERAL HOSPITAL], is a tall order. Nicole has been slowly but surely figuring out how to make Cassie her own. She’s doing a great job. I adore her.
Weekly: Shayne and Marah have been mentioned a lot lately. Do you want them to return?
Newman: I think they’re working on Shayne coming back and, maybe one day, I hope, Marah coming back. I always think these kids must be in heavy therapy somewhere. How crazy would they be by now, just being the son and daughter of these people and having siblings appear out of nowhere? They’re both dynamic characters, and it would be good to have them on the canvas.
