All My Children

Five Minutes With Natalia Livingston

Comments

Soap Opera Digest: How would you describe the decision that Emily faced?
Natalia Livingston: It’s such a difficult choice. I can’t even imagine being put in a situation like that.Digest: How does she decide?
Livingston: It comes down to her being as logical as she can about it because that’s all she can do. There are a lot of scenes where she’s talking to her father and he’s giving her guidance and telling her, “Now you have to think like a doctor and put yourself in this emergency situation. Think about what you need to do. Prioritize. Who’s going to need treatment first?”Digest: Between this and Robin’s triage operation, Emily’s been making major life-and-death decisions.
Livingston: I know. It’s so crazy. This is her second situation like that. In the train wreck, she and Robin performed a procedure on Alexis with, I don’t even know what that was — fishing wire and a lot of vodka [laughs]? Here they had a curling iron of all things to cauterize arteries. They took a sign down that was hanging in the lobby and used the thread to sew up the wound. They used sponges, anything they could find in the lobby. Luckily, they found lots of alcohol for Robin.Digest: The crisis seems to have really brought Emily and Nikolas closer.
Livingston: Yes, Nikolas is being very sweet. He’s trying to help Emily through this whole ordeal. He knows what she’s been through with the surgery and he’s trying to comfort her and distract her and keep her mind off this horrible situation. He actually brings up the subject of marriage.Digest: Cool! So, what are the pros and cons of taping such an elaborate storyline like this?
Livingston: The cons are how detailed it all is. There are so many different shots. It’s sometimes like five, six, seven shots for just one scene, and you’re already working on 45-50 scenes in a day. So, instead of an out time at 10 at night, it becomes 5 in the morning. That’s hard. The fun part is that you have to keep it light when you work such long hours. Everybody has been joking around and laughing between takes. Also, the final product is a big pro because I think it’s an incredible story. It’s so original and unique and everybody knew that. We were all excited to give it a try and make it happen.
