Zach lovers, take heart! Though our beloved Mr. Slater is slated for a seemingly fatal aircraft crash this week on AMC, Pine Valley-ites have a solid track record of surviving mid-air misfortune.
1983: Nina and Steve were presumed dead when their plane went down while on vacation. Turns out, Nina wasn’t really on the plane, and the female passenger who met her maker was Kim McGuire. Steve was injured, but pulled through. Cliff’s relief over seeing Nina alive presaged their reconciliation.
1984: Adam staged his own presumed death-by-plane-crash to test new bride Erica’s loyalty. “Widow” Erica wasted no time in moving on — by the time Adam revealed that he was very much alive, Erica had popped the question to Mike Roy!
1988: Jack and Erica were forced to make an emergency landing in New Mexico while en route to L.A. Not only did they live, but they shared their first kiss!
1997: Amateur pilot Tanner Jordan, who had the hots for Hayley, deliberately caused their plane to require an emergency landing as they traveled to Texas to see Mateo, to whom Hayley was engaged. They landed in a cornfield and took shelter in a cave, where Tanner proceeded to give Hayley the date rape drug and convinced her that they had slept together. Ultimately, Tanner’s trickery was revealed.
1997: Maria was presumed dead in the crash of TransGlobal Flight 149, bound for Pine Valley from New York; Brooke, Maddie, Edmund and Jim survived. In 2002, it was revealed that David had found Maria barely clinging to life and nursed her back to health — albeit with an FDA-unapproved drug that wiped out her memory.
2004: Paul staged a helicopter crash to fake the death of Little Adam (to Babe) and Miranda (to Bianca). Both tots were actually fine (minus the whole baby-switch thing).
2006: A private jet carrying Babe and Josh ra.n out of fuel and plummeted into an island. Their families fear the worst, but the duo was rescued by JR, Jamie and Julia.
2010: Thanks to David’s trickery, Erica’s plane went down — straight into Caleb’s house — in May.
