Designing Woman

Comments

How long have you worked at B&B? “It seems like yesterday, but I started working at B&B in January 2000.”

How did you end up there? “A friend had told me that they where looking for a designer. I was not sure that I wanted to work on a soap opera, but I loved the fact that B&B was about the fashion industry. Fashion was always my great passion and the way Nolan Miller achieved success with his clothes on DYNASTY was a great inspiration.”

Which B&B actor do you have the most fun outfitting? “Brooke is probably my favorite character to dress, but that is also because she [Katherine Kelly Lang] trusts me with my decisions completely.”

What’s more fun — designing originals or shopping for outfits? “The thing I like doing the most is designing gowns and dresses for fashion shows, and I am very lucky to have someone who understands every one of my visions when the gowns are made. Shopping is something that has become like a sport; people can’t believe the speed I shop at.”

What designers have been your idols? “Some of my great inspirations have been Christian Dior and Valentino. Dior left a particular impression on me since I remember going to Paris with my mother, who shopped in his very upscale boutique.”

Were you always interested in fashion? “Even as a child I was always cutting up things and making things. One of my greatest regrets is that my mother wanted to send me to the Domus Academy in Italy, where Gianfranco Ferre would have been my teacher, but I did not want to go.”

Tell us a little about your background. “I was born in Vienna and raised in Spain. I completed my journalism/publicity studies in London and additional education then led to a Television Direction and Production diploma from the BBC’s Television Training Academy. I spent my first year out of college working as an assistant beauty and teen fashion editor for the German publication of Miss Vogue. My experience also includes work as a stylist for Vogue, Vanity Fair, and Elle.”

What are some of the memorable moments of your career? “Of course, winning my first Emmy. There is something very special about being acknowledged for your hard work; it finally makes it all worth it. The many nights I had to get up at 4 a.m. to work on Coyote Ugly; the long nights on PARTY OF FIVE and the martial arts movies somewhere in Arizona or Utah. There was also working for Telemundo in Mexico and getting very sick because I did not pay attention when they told us not to eat anything green that was not boiled.”

What does it feel like to win two Emmys for your work on B&B? “Winning two Emmys makes me feel like it was not just a fluke when I won the first time. What a great honor!”
